Sacred Symbols: the Shell

Often the shell, also in a stylized form, appears in many roman architectonical and non architectonical representations: frequently in niches, fountains, pediments, funeral representations. It thus represents a very important sacred symbol which must be considered a relevant tool within the sacred "non linguistic" language rather than a mere decorative element. Surely profane individuals will keep on considering this symbol as a decoration but its role has to be adequately acknowledge by non-profane.

The shell is first of all a symbol linked to Marine Deities and to Water (also as hermetic principle). In this way its links to the female polarity, and consequently to the Moon (even in this case also as hermetic element) are clearly evident. The shell, emblem of the female dimension, describes a symbology connected to Love, Fertility and Generation.

This explains also the strict link between the symbology of the shell and Venus: Venus was born on a shell to highlight this principle and this cosmic force.The shell is symbol of Love, marriage, Green as sacred colour to Venus. But the shell describes not only the birth and the generation but also the re-birth and re-generation. For this reason it is shown in funeral representations to describe this re-generation and re-birth after the profane death in the Way towards the Celestial Deities. It is thus a geometric, hermetic and initiation symbol.

In those rites where it is necessary to evidence this function shells are involved: also in rites for agricultural fertility, as well as in those rites where the fertility as cosmic force is evoked, can be used the shell to highlight this symbolism. We speak also through our symbols.

Therefore the shell as sacred symbol is always involved in the most important moments of a person's life: birth, initiation, marriage, fertility and generation, fertility of the land nourishing us (Mother Earth), death.

Simboli: la Conchiglia

Spesso la conchiglia appare, anche in forma stilizzata, su molte raffigurazioni architettoniche e non architettoniche romane: frequentemente nelle nicchie, nelle fontane, nei frontoni, nelle raffigurazioni funerarie. Essa costituisce un simbolo sacro molto importante e non deve essere mai considerata come una mera decorazione. Certamente i profani la vedono e continueranno a vederla come tale: ma è essenziale che la sua importanza come veicolo di un messaggio ed un simbolismo sacro sia adeguatamente riconosciuta.

La conchiglia è un simbolo in primo luogo ovviamente legato alle Divinità Acquatiche e all'Acqua (anche come principio ermetico). In tal modo si evidenzia il suo legame con la polarità femminile e conseguentemente il legame con la simbologia lunare (anche in questo caso anche in senso ermetico). La conchiglia, emblema della dimensione femminile, esprime pertanto una simbologia erotica connessa alla fecondità e alla generazione.

Questo spiega anche il forte nesso fra la simbologia della conchiglia e Venere: Venere nasce su una conchiglia proprio per sottolineare questo principio e questa forza cosmica. La conchiglia è emblema dell'Amore, del matrimonio, del colore Verde. Ma la conchiglia non descrive solo la nascita e la generazione, ma anche la ri-nascita e la ri-generazione. Per questo in molte rappresentazioni funerarie è presente la conchiglia proprio per descrivere questa ri-generazione e rinascita dopo la prima morte (morte profana) nel cammino verso gli Dei Celesti. Essa è quindi un simbolo geometrico, emeretico e iniziatico.

In tutti i riti in cui si deve evidenziare questa funzione e questo significato sono presenti delle conchiglie: anche nei riti di fecondità agraria, così come in tutti i riti dove si evoca questa forza cosmica, possono essere presenti delle conchiglie per evidenziare questo simbolismo.

La conchiglia, come simbolo, è quindi sempre presente nei momenti più importanti dell'esistenza di una persona: nascita, iniziazione, matrimonio, fertilità e generazione, fertilità della Terra che ci nutre, morte.

Mens et Vox

In the Traditional Roman Religion, also according to different circumstances, some invocations are made aloud, others whispered or murmured, others are only thought.

These variations pushed me to make some considerations about the meanings and differences between "Mens" and "Vox". According to a religious point of view, Mens cannot be translated into Mind but rather into Thought. Similarly Vox doesn't correspond to the term Voice but to Word.

This clarification also evidences the vulgarization, trivialization and profanation process suffered by such sacred terms whose modern meaning and use totally upset their original meaning.

Which is thus the meaning of what is only tacitly thought and what is explicitly said?

It is important to note that between Mens and Vox a constant relation always exists: no one can totally prevail even if Mens detains always major value and importance. Therefore the scale proceeds from Mens ("What is not manifested") to the explicit Word and finally to the written word. For thi reason, what was considered highly sacred (i.e. the secret name of Rome) couldn't be written laso because what is written can be easily diffused and profaned: considering again the case of the secret name of Rome, its diffusion could cause an evocatio of Rome or a removal of its Divine Spirit.

Addressing the Divine through Mens (Unexpressed thought or murmured words) implies always a very deep relation with the Deities: for this reason Animus must be Castus or pure to which will correspond a purity of the Body. The sentence mens sana in corpore sano derives from this clarification. This sentence doesn't prefigure a mental, psychological and physical health but a Purity in Soul and Body as distinct but interrelated entities.

This is also another example of that vulgarization, trivialization and profanation process mentioned above. Also the terms we use are important.

Caste iubet lex adire ad deos, animo videlicet in quo sunt omnia; nec tollit castimoniam corporis, sed hoc oportet intellegi, quom multum animus corpori praestet, observeturque ut casto corpore adeatur, multo esse in animis id servandum magis. Nam illud vel aspersione aquae vel dierum numero tollitur, animi labes nec diuturnitate evanescere nec amnibus ullis elui potest.

Cicero De legibus 2,24

"One of the legal maxims I have mentioned, states, that we should approach the gods with purity,—that is to say, with purity of Spirit; for this is every thing. Not that the law dispenses with purity of body,—but that we should understand the superiority of the Spirit over the body; and if we are attentive to the purity of our persons, we ought to be still more so to the purity of our souls. The pollutions of the body may indeed be removed by a few ablutions in a few days; but the stains of the conscience cannot be obliterated by any lapse of time, and all the rivers in the world cannot wash them out."

All the different verbal invocations to Gods/Goddesses (carmina, precatio, uotum, gratulatio, ecc...) may show variations in intensity of the expressed words to highlight this relation between Vox and Mens in the officiant's mind as well as the different modalities thorugh which the invocation and the sacrifice (with the related rites) are transmitted and carried at the Divine level.

Mens et Vox

Nella Religione Tradizionale Romana, anche secondo le circostanze, alcune invocazioni vengono effettuate a voce alta, altre vengono sussurrate o mormorate, altre ancora vengono solo "pensate".In altri casi c'è un alternarsi fra parole sussurrate ed altre solo pensate.

Questo fatto ci porta ad effettuare qualche breve considerazione sulla differenza e significato di "Mens" e di "Vox". Da un punto di vista religioso, Mens non può essere tradotto con Mente quanto con Pensiero. Allo stesso modo Vox non corrisponde al termine Voce quanto a Parola.

Questa precisazione evidenzia la volgarizzazione, banalizzazione e profanazione di termini sacri il cui significato moderno sconvolge totalmente il loro senso originario.

Quale è quindi il senso di ciò che è solo tacitamente pensato e ciò che viene esplicitamente detto?

Bisogna considerare che fra Mens e Vox esiste sempre una relazione costante: nessuna forma può totalmente prevalere sull'altra anche se Mens detiene sempre un valore maggiore. Si procede quindi dal Pensiero (ciò che non è Manifesto - Coscienza) fino alla Parola esplicita e a questa segue, in un livello più basso, la parola scritta. Per questo motivo, ciò che era considerato massimamente sacro (ad es. il nome segreto di Roma) non poteva essere scritto anche perchè ciò che è scritto più facilmente può essere "profanato": sempre nell'esempio del nome segreto di Roma, una sua diffusione avrebbe potuto portare ad una evocatio dell'Urbe ovvero ad una rimozione del suo Spirito Divino.

Rivolgersi al Divino tramite Mens (pensiero inespresso verbalmente o parole mormorate e sussurate) implica una relazione molto profonda: in particolare l'Animo deve essere Casto ovvero Puro cui deve corrispondere una purezza del Corpo. Da ciò deriva l'espressione mens sana in corpore sano che non prefigura una sanità intellettiva, psicologica e fisica, ma una purezza dell'Animo (Pensiero) e del Corpo (materia) come entità distinte ma interrelate.

Anche in questo caso è da sottolineare la volgarizzazione, banalizzazione e profanazione di una espressione che in sè sintetizza un concetto molto più profondo di quanto si possa immaginare.

Cicerone De legibus 2,24

"La legge ordina di accostarsi con purezza agli dèi, purezza d'animo naturalmente, poiché in essa tutto è compreso; non esclude però la purezza del corpo, ma occorre che si capisca questo, cioè che, essendo l'anima considerata superiore al corpo, se ci si deve presentare con purezza di corpo, questo principio sarebbe molto più necessario osservarlo nell'anima. Quello infatti può essere purificato o con lustrazioni o col trascorrere di un certo numero di giorni; ma la macchia dell'anima non può né svanire col tempo né detergersi con l' acqua di un fiume."

Tutte le varie espressioni di invocazioni verbali (carmina, precatio, uotum, gratulatio, ecc...) possono presentare variazioni di intesità della Parola proprio per sottolineare questo rapporto fra Vox e Mens nell'intenzione dell'officiante così come modalità diverse mediante le quali l'invocazione ed il sacrificio stesso (con i suoi riti) sono trasportati presso il Divino.

Slavery

Slavery is one of the most peculiar characteristic of the ancient Roman society and economy. With ragards to this aspects, there are however many misunderstandings and prejudices: slavery in Ancient Rome had nothing in common with the modern concept of slavery i.e. the forms of slavery diffused in North America.

Ancient slavery had no racial or national feature (these concepts were totally unknown to the civis romanvs) also because the idea of "slave" had deeper and more existential reasons.

It is important to note that in Ancient Rome, nobody was a "human being" by birth: it was necessary to become a member of the human consortium. Children actually remained out of the human dimension: they were in a lower condition. It was not a question of being an adult: to be a real man or woman it was necessary a "passage phase" with specific rites useful to give a child this new qualification being accepted among the other men and women in a peer relation. Before this, a child was considered an incapable individual (in a very broad sense) unable to correctly and wisely choice and thus requiring an external intervention for any correct decision.

Similarly a slave was considered as such because incapable (even if adult): slaves were considered like children. Even if slaves were member of the familia and for this not subjected to no-use arbitrary violence and abuses, they hadn't a qualification of humanitas. Slaves, lacking humanitas, were not able to have any idea of magnanimitas, aeqvitas, gravitas, prvdentia. They cannot achieve the Virtvus.

In brief, slavery is not only an exterior characteristics, but primarily it is an inner existential qualification. Slavery is a spiritual condition. One can be subjected to any kind of injustice being and remaining however a free man or woman. Viceversa, one totally subjected to any kind of physical pushes, instincts or urges may be apparently a free man/woman, but foundamentally a slave. To a free man's/woman's eyes, he/she seems to be like a whimsical kid or a foolish silly man/woman trapped into a chaotic tangle.

Seneca provides us with an interesting definition of "slave":

Sciet pro patria pugnandum esse, dissuadebit timor; sciet pro amicis desudandum esse ad extremum usque sudorem, sed deliciae vetabunt; sciet in uxore gravissimum esse genus iniuriae paelicem, sed illum libido in contraria inpinget. (Seneca Epist. 95 Liber XV)

"A man may know that he should fight for his country, but fear will dissuade him. A man may know that he should sweat forth his last drop of energy on behalf of his friends, but luxury will forbid. A man may know that keeping a mistress is the worst kind of insult to his wife, but lust will drive him in the opposite direction."

It also true the sentence of the Emperor Adrian according to whom slavery will never disappear: it will just change its name. All this clearly evidences how important is this issue also in our present times.

Freedom and slavery have not to be considered as something "given", but real freedom has to be achieved and maintained in the everyday praxes thanks to inner personal discipline, Virtvs towards mankind and Pietas towards the Immortals.

La schiavitù

La schiavitù è una delle caratteristiche più peculiari della società e dell'economia romana. Su questo aspetto però esistono grandi fraintendimenti e pregiudizi: la schiavitù nell'Antica Roma di fatto non aveva nulla in comune con il concetto di schivitù "moderna" come ad esempio quella diffusa negli Stati Uniti d'America.

La schiavitù antica non aveva alcuna connotazione "razziale" o nazionale (tutti concetti sconosciuti al civis romanvs) anche perchè l'idea di schiavo o di schiava si legava a principi molto più profondi ed esistenziali.

Bisogna partire dall'idea che nell'Antica Roma non si nasceva "uomo" o "donna": bisognava diventarlo e dimostrare di meritare di essere tali. Il bambino/la bambina di fatto rimanevano fuori dalla cerchia degli uomini/donne fintanto che non avessero superato una specifica fase di passaggio. Prima di questo passaggio il bambino o la bambina rimanevano degli "incapaci", dei "non-capaci" (nel senso più letterale del termine) e per questa ragione avrebbero avuto bisogno di qualcuno che potesse decidere per loro.

Allo stesso modo lo schiavo o la schiava erano tali perchè erano dei non-capaci anche se adulti. Anche se lo schiavo o la schiava erano comunque membri della familia e come tale non dovevano essere maltrattati o sadicamente oggetto di sevizie, non rientravano per questo nella dimensione degli uomini e delle donne: non possedevano una qualificazione di humanitas. Gli schiavi essendo privi di humanitas, non conoscono la magnanimitas, l'aeqvitas, la gravitas, la prvdentia. Non possono arrivare alla Virtvus.

In breve la schiavitù non è solo un attributo esteriore, ma è primariamente una qualificazione esistenziale interiore. La schiavitù è una condizione dello spirito. Si è quindi schiavi delle proprie pulsioni, delle proprie passioni: lo schiavo appare agli occhi di un uomo libero come un bambino capriccioso o come uno sciocco intrappolato in un groviglio caotico da cui non riesce a liberarsi.

Seneca ci fornisce una bella definizione di schiavo:

"Saprà che bisogna battersi per la patria, ma la paura lo distoglierà; saprà che per gli amici bisogna sudare fino all'ultima goccia, ma glielo vieteranno i piaceri; saprà che è un gravissimo affronto per la moglie avere un amante, ma la lussuria lo spingerà ad agire contro virtù."

E' anche vero il detto dell'Imperatore Adriano secondo cui la schiavitù non scomparirà mai, cambierà solo di nome. Tutto questo evidenzia inoltre l'attualità di questo principio essenziale.

La libertà o la schiavitù non devono pertanto essere mai considerate come un qualcosa di "dato", ma, all'interno della Religione Tradizionale Romana, la vera libertà deve essere conquistata e coltivata quotidianamente grazie alla disciplina interiore, la Virtvs verso gli uomini e la Pietas verso gli Dei/Dee.

Roman Medicine - 1

Roman Medicine is a very complex issue and deeply studied: its complexity however derives by different interrelated problematic dimensions. Medicine was not only a technical or scientific (or pseudo-scientific according to some researchers and scholars) topic (see for example the rather advanced methodologies and practices Romans adopted in surgery): medicine implied a deep knowledge of Nature, its cycles and manifestations in a very broad sense (i.e. with regards to the sphere of the plants' and trees' world) and the involvement of Divine Forces.

Here is not possible analyze in detail this issue and I will suggest in the future some specific books devote to this. Now I'd like to highlight just a few interesting expressions of the Divine presence in the Roman Medicine.

In the incantamenta, the doctor invokes Mother Earth so that She will give power to the herbs he needs to prepare his medical remedies. Then he invokes the herbs so that they let him pick up them confirming that he obtained the permission to collect them by Who created them. He invokes the herbs so that they will produce the positive effects he needs. If everything has gone well with positive results, the doctor will thank per nomen Eius qui uos iussit nascier (in the name of who has created you).

In an interesting book titled "La Preghiera Romana (the Roman Prayer)" by G.B. Pighi (in italian) are cited some beautiful invocations:

Herba uettonica, quae prima inuenta est ab Scolapio, his precibus adesto, peto; magna herbarum pmnium diceris per Hunc, qui te iussit creari et remediis plurimi adesse.

"Betony, who first was discovered by Aesculapius, I pray, may you attend these prayers; of all the herbs will you be called great for this, that he has command you to be created and many remedies to offer.

Herba eriphia, ut adsis me rogante et cum gaudio uirtus tua praesto sit et ea omnia persanes quae Scolapius aut Chiron centauros magister medicinae da te adinuenit.

"Herb Eriphia, come to my begging and may your glad powers be close at hand, and by her, who Aesculapius or else the centaur Chiron, the great doctor of medicine, discovered in you, will all be most healthy."

Medicina Romana - 1

Il tema della Medicina Romana appare molto complesso poichè in esso convergono molteplici sfere: la medicina non era solo un fatto tecnico (vedere le metodologie chirurgiche anche piuttosto avanzate), ma implicava anche conoscenze naturali profonde (legate ad esempio alla conoscenza delle piante) ed il coinvolgimento del Divino.

Senza entrare in questo sede nei dettagli di questa dimensione, mi piace ora fare qualche piccolo accenno ad alcune espressioni del Divino nella sfera della medicina. Negli incantamenta, il medico prima chiede alla Terra Madre che dia potenza alle erbe che gli saranno necessarie per la preparazione dei suoi rimedi. Poi chiede che l'erba si lasci cogliere dal medico che ha ottenuto il permesso di raccoglierle da Chi che le ha create. Quindi chiede che l'erba possa generare gli effetti benefici desiderati. Se tutto avrà esito positivo, allora il medico ringrazierà per nomen Eius qui uos iussit nascier (in nome di Colui che vi ha fatto nascere)

Nell'interessante libro "La Preghiera Romana" di G.B. Pighi (Ed. Victrix) sono riportate alcune bellissime invocazioni:

Herba uettonica, quae prima inuenta est ab Scolapio, his precibus adesto, peto; magna herbarum pmnium diceris per Hunc, qui te iussit creari et remediis plurimi adesse.

This is a very particular month focused essentially on the festivities and rites of Saturnalia and Divalia (dec. 21st). On Crowds

Do you ask me what you should regard as especially to be avoided? I say, crowds; for as yet you cannot trust yourself to them with safety. I shall admit my own weakness, at any rate; for I never bring back home the same character that I took abroad with me. Something of that which I have forced to be calm within me is disturbed; some of the foes that I have routed return again. Just as the sick man, who has been weak for a long time, is in such a condition that he cannot be taken out of the house without suffering a relapse, so we ourselves are affected when our souls are recovering from a lingering disease. To consort with the crowd is harmful; there is no person who does not make some vice attractive to us, or stamp it upon us, or taint us unconsciously therewith. Certainly, the greater the mob with which we mingle, the greater the danger.

Withdraw into yourself, as far as you can. Associate with those who will make a better man of you. Welcome those whom you yourself can improve. The process is mutual; for men learn while they teach.

La Folla

Mi chiedi che cosa secondo me dovresti soprattutto evitare? La folla. Non puoi ancora affidarti a essa tranquillamente. Quanto a me, ti confesserò la mia debolezza: quando rientro non sono mai lo stesso di prima; l'ordine interiore che mi ero dato, in parte si scompone. Qualche difetto che avevo eliminato, ritorna. Capita agli ammalati che una prolungata infermità li indebolisca al punto di non poter uscire senza danno: così è per me, reduce da una lunga malattia spirituale. I rapporti con una grande quantità di persone sono deleterî: c'è sempre qualcuno che ci suggerisce un vizio o ce lo trasmette o ce lo attacca a nostra insaputa. Più è la gente con cui ci mescoliamo, tanto maggiore è il rischio.

Ritirati in te stesso per quanto puoi; frequenta le persone che possono renderti migliore e accogli quelli che puoi rendere migliori. Il vantaggio è reciproco perché mentre s'insegna si impara.

A Goddess particularly relevant within the Traditional Roman Religion, maybe poorly known and studied today, is Victoria. She is strictly linked to the deeper sense and meaning of Ludi, already mentioned and described, and to the life of a society in its more traditional perspective.

The importance of Victoria is also evidenced by the strong resistance the most important leaders of the Traditional Roman Religion expressed against the removal of her Statue from the Senate. For this aim, here it's also important to remind the name of Q. Aurelius Simmacus, one of the most relevant and shining figure among the defenders of Mos Maiorum during a period of global decline in the IV and V century A.D.

Why did the major leaders of the Traditional Roman Religion at that time strongly struggle to hamper the removal of the Victoria's Statue from the Senate? It's thus evident that this Goddess had some fundamental role in the Traditional Religion.

Victoria is an extremely complex Goddess: here it is possible to cite only some essential characteristics.

Victoria is first of all the sacralization of the "Triumphal Force" in a very broad sense. She is Triumphan Force in a battle or at War, but also during the Ludi or munera: she is a Force freeing energies and euphoria. But she is also a Triumphal Force against the Death. Victoria, standing up over her war cart, is the sacralization of the "Trascending Re-birth". For this reason, Ludi were essentially aimed to awake this Mystical Savior Force totally based on Action.

Victoria is thus the sacralization of the active exaltation (opposed to passive contemplation), linked not only to the fight but also to Dance (see Salii, Luperci, Arvalii).

This Goddess is also linked to the lar victor, lar martis et pacis triunphalis or those Forces "who founded the City and created the Empire". Victoria is not only a force emerging from the Action, but is a Triumphant Force against Chaos, against destruction and dis-order. And Rome and the Roman Empire are the most perfect materialization of this Divine Order.

Every victory has its own sacred meaning and sense and the Imperator becomes the manifestation of a mystical force which, thanks to Victoria, actually transformed him putting him over a mystical dimension and level. For this reason the Imperator and the Winner were placed, during a triumphal rite, over the shields, becasue the shield was the symbol of the Sky. This rite thus made the Winner and the Imperator like Jupiter.

For this reason Rome, a political tool for the realization of the Divine Order prevailing over Chaos, disgregation, destruction and dis-order, so highly considered Victoria because she finally represented the inner soul of the Roman power and fides. The Imperator's health, the integrity of the Roman State and Society (with the related community of families) and the reason of Rome's existence itself depended totally uponVictoria.

Within this perspective, considering the Chaos, the global decline and the diffusion of any degrading and profane expression characterizing these dark times of human decline, the Cult of Victoria still detains a critical role as essential fundamental of the Traditional Roman Religion.

Una Dea particolarmente rilevante nella Religione Tradizionale Romana, e purtroppo poco conosciuta ed approfondita, è Victoria. Essa si lega intimamente al significato più profondo dei Ludi, di cui si è già parlato, e alla vita stessa della società nel senso più tradizionale.

L'importanza di questa Divinità è resa anche piuttosto evidente dalla tenacia e dalla forza con le quali i più importanti esponenti del credo religioso tradizionale romano si opposero alla rimozione della sua Statua nel Senato. Basti ricordare in questa sede il ruolo giocato in quella circostanza da Quinto Aurelio Simmaco, una delle figure più rilevanti e luminose fra i difensori del Mos Maiorum in quell'epoca di tramonto generale che fu il IV e il V secolo dell'era volgare.

Perchè i maggiori esponenti della religione tradiziona romana di quell'epoca lottarono così strenuamente per impedire la rimozione della statua della Vittoria dal Senato? E' evidente che questa Divinità deve detenere un'importanza fondamentale nella tradizione religiosa.

Si tratta infatti di una Divinità estremamente complessa di cui in questa sede è possibile tracciare solo alcuni aspetti essenziali.

Victoria infatti è in primo luogo la sacralizzazione della "Forza Trionfale" in un senso molto vasto. Innanzitutto è Forza Trionfante nella guerra, ma anche nei Ludi, nei munera: una forza che scatena energie e ebbrezza. Ma è anche la Forza Trionfante dell'Uomo sulla Morte. Vittoria, in piedi sul suo Carro, personifica la "rinascita trascendente". Per questo i Ludi avevano lo scopo di risvegliare questa Forza Mistica Salvatrice che si fonda totalmente sull'Azione.

Vittoria è quindi sacralizzazione dell'esaltazione attiva, il risveglio dell'Azione connesso non solo al combattimento, ma anche alla Danza (cfr Salii, Luperci, Arvalii).

Victoria è legata inoltre al lar victor, lar martis et pacis triunphalis ovvero quelle forze che "hanno fondato la città e costituito l'Impero". La Dea Victoria non è quindi solo una Forza che prorompe nell'Azione, ma è anche una Forza che trionfa sul Caos, sulla distruzione, sul disordine. E di questa Forza Trionfale Roma e il suo Impero sono la materializzazione più perfetta.

Ogni vittoria ha quindi un significato sacro e l'Imperator diviene la manifestazione di una forza mistica che di fatto lo trasformava e lo trasfigurava. Per questo il vincitore veniva portato sugli scudi perchè lo scudo simboleggiava la volta celeste: questo atto assimilava pertanto il vincitore a Giove.

Per questo Roma, come strumento politico di realizzazione dell'ordine che prevale sul disordine e sulle forze del caos, rendeva onore alla Dea Vittoria perchè alla fine essa rappresentava l'anima della grandezza e della fides romana. La salute dell'Imperatore, l'integrità dello Stato Romano e alla fine la sua stessa ragion d'essere si legavano alla Dea Vittoria.

In questa prospettiva, in considerazione del Caos, della decadenza generale, del dilagare di ogni espressione degradata e profanata che connotano questa età oscura in cui viviamo, il Culto della Dea Vittoria oggi appare come un fondamento essenziale nella Religione Tradizionale Romana.

Il mese di Novembre, così denominato perchè era il nono mese dell'anno antico che iniziava a Marzo, rappresenta il periodo dell'"Interiorità".

Novembre è focalizzato sul flusso dell'Energia Vegetativa e Vitale che rientra nella Terra durante tutto il corso dell'inverno. E' un periodo dedicato alle divinità sotterranee (Inferi) da cui deriva l'abbondanza della vita sulla superficie della Terra.

Novembre è dedicato pertanto a Plutone (Giove Infero) che significa "ricchissimo" e a Proserpina (La Fanciulla che procede come i Serpenti). Plutone rappresenta la profondità, Proserpina la forza vitale che alimenterà la vita in primavera.

A Plutone sono sacri tutti gli animali neri, il cipresso ed il narciso. Viene invocato battendo le mani per terra.

A Proserpina sono sacri il melograno ed il papavero. I funerali sono sottoposti alla sua protezione.

November is focused on the flow of the natural energy returning back under the ground during winter. This period is dedicated to Infernal underground Gods (Inferi) from who derives the energy for the creatures on the surface.

November is thus dedicated to Pluto (Underground Jupiter) whose name means "extremely rich", and to Proserpina (the Girl walking like snakes). Pluto represents the deep, Proserpina a vital force nourishing life in spring.

Black animals, cypress and narcissus are sacred to Pluto. He may be evoked beating the hands on the ground

Pomegranate tree and poppy are sacred to Proserpina who protects also funerals.

Meaning and Sense of Ludi

Many rites in the Ancient Roman Religion implied the execution of Ludi or sport activites and games. These activities, surely showing competitive and sporting features, had a remarkable "sacred" value and importance. For this reason the Ludi had the feature of Res Divinae. Usually an agape, supported by an invitatione daemonum, completed the Ludi.

Ludi were usually held in the Circus where the presence of the sacred numerology and symbology was particularly evident. There were three metae named ternae summitates metarum and three altars devoted to the Great Triad. There were five spatia. There were twelve gates from which the carts entered the circus. Seven was the number of the annual Ludi, seven was the number of the rounds of a complete tournment, seven was the number of the Eggs, Tritons or Dolphins to mark the seven curricula. The Egg represented the generating matter and "the potential power" while the Dolphin or the Triton was the symbol of Neptune, the fecundating energy of water.

Everyone attending Ludi perfectly knew the symbolic power of such manifestations. Ludi thus were full of magical forces and energies: for this reason they were preceded by great sacrifices with the invocation of great Divine Forces. This explains also why Romans held the Ludi also in case of great danger of the State and the Community.

In particular, the horse races detained a peculiar role because they evoked the power of the cosmic generating energy: even in this case it should be noted the importance of the October Equus, the sacrifice of the horse dedicated to Mars.

The presence of specific colors added further magical power to Ludi: the White (Ctone-Lunar power) and the Red (Uranic-solar power)

Each meta sudans was considered a "living place" and each altar dedicated to the God Consus was the focal point of Infernal forces: but the presence of altars devoted to Celestial Gods/Goddesses granted the presence of the uranic principle. The Circus thus became a Daemonum Concilium or a Divine catalyst (with specific seats left empty for them).

Hence sport activities and games (even those more violent - munera) were accompanied by great magical and sacred evocations. The final outcome was the Victory of Celestial Forces over the Infernal ones rather than a simple sport success. During the Ludi opening parade (pompa), on sacred carts (tensae), the symbols of the great Deities protecting the State and granting the Pax Deorum were presented: first of all the symbols of Jupiter O. M. (the lighting, the scepter with the eagle, the Golden Crown)

Ludi were sacred to the Goddess Victoria or the sacralization of the Triumphant Force.

These sacred sense and meaning of sports and games have been today completely lost as consequence of the complete dissacration of any human activity and natural manifestation. Nonetheless having even a little understanding and knowledge of this meaning may help in understanting the complex symbology at the base of these ancient events and of the sites where in the past these rites were held. In the same time all this may help us in considering with a different sight these expressions of the human being and, where possible, to correctly integrate our rites with some Ludi maintaining their real value, meaning and sense.

Molti riti nell'antica Religione Romana prevedevano lo svolgimento di Ludi ovvero di giochi o attività sportive. Queste attività, pur avendo un carattere certemente agonistico, detenevano una valenza spiccatamente "sacra". Pertanto i giochi e le attività sportive avevano a pieno titolo il carattere di Res Divinae. Solitamente un àgape, accompagnata da una invitatione daemonum, chiudeva i Ludi.

I Ludi si svolgevano solitamente nei circhi dove molto forte era la presenza della numerologia e la simbologia sacra. Tre erano le mete (ternae summitates metarum) e tre erano le are presenti (Grande Triade). Cinque erano gli spatia. Dodici il numero delle porte da cui uscivano i carri. Sette il numero dei Ludi Annuali. sette il numero dei giri che componeva una gara completa, sette il numero delle uova, tritoni o delfini che segnavano i sette curricula. L'uovo rappresentava la materia generatrice e la "potenzialità" mentre il delfino ed il tritone rimandavano a Nettuno, la forza fecondatrice delle acque.

I Ludi pertanto si riempivano di forza ed energia "magica" e per questo venivano svolti preceduti da grandi sacrifici e con l'invocazione di potenti forze divine: ed è per questo che venivano svolti dei Ludi in momenti di grande pericolo per la comunità.

La corsa dei cavalli, in particolare, rievocava lo slancio e la potenza della forza generatrice cosmica: anche in questo si può notare l'importanza dell'October Equus, il sacrificio del cavallo consacrato a Marte.

La presenza di specifici colori aggiungeva maggiore potere magico ai Ludi: il Bianco (potenza ctonio-lunare) ed il Rosso (potenza uranico-solare).

Ciascuna meta sudans era considerata "viva" e ogni altare didicato al Dio Consus era il punto agonale di forze infere: la presenza di altari agli Dei/Dee Celesti garantiva però la presenza del principio uranico. Per questo il Circo diventava un Daemonum Concilium ovvero catalizzatore di Dei/Dee (con appositi spazi lasciati vuoti per essi).

In realtà quindi allo svolgimento di attività sportive o di giochi anche cruenti (munera) si sovrapponeva una grande evocazione sacra e magica. La Vittoria era quella non tanto degli atleti, ma delle forze Uraniche su quelle Infere. Nel corteo di apertura dei giochi (pompa) venivano fatti sfilare sui carri sacri (tensae) i simboli (exuviae) delle grandi divinità che garantivano la Pax Deorum primi fra tutti quelli di Giove ottimo Massimo (la folgore, lo scettro sormontato dall'aquila, la corona d'oro).

Tutti i Ludi erano poi consacrati alla Dea Victoria ovvero la sacralizzazione della Forza Trionfale.

Questo significato sacro dei giochi e delle attività sportive è oggi andato del tutto perduto sull'onda della completa dissacrazione di ogni attività umana e naturale. Avere una cognizione sia pur minima di questo senso e significato può aiutare a comprendere in primo luogo la complessa simbologia di queste manifestazioni e dei luoghi che un tempo ospitavano i Ludi. Nello stesso tempo ci può aiutare a vedere con altri occhi queste particolari espressioni dell'agire umano e, ove possibile, ad integrare i nostri riti con piccoli Ludi rispettandone il senso più vero ed il significato più profondo.

October 12th: Fontinalia

October in the past was characterized by many important festivities: first of all the Ludi Augustales (7 - 13) and the Ludi Capitolini (15). The former were related to the Emperor Augustus become "Divus" (in a next post I will analyze the concept of "Divus" distinct from the concept of "Deus").

Ludi Capitolini were related to the chasing away of the Gauls from the Capitol. It's important to note that these festivities were celebrated with Ludi or rituals linked to the Goddess Vittoria.

The complex ritual of the celebration of the October Equus cannot be described here.

On October 10th Meditrinalia were celebrated: Meditrinalia were "curative" rituals during which new wine was used during a libatio expressing the following formula: "novum vinum libo, novo veteri morbo medeor" (I make this libatio with new wine to cure old diseases with the "new")

On October 19th Armilustrium was celebrated: swords, shields and spears were purified and closed in the Temple of Mars after the end of the military year (which begins on march the 9th).

On October 28th Isia, festivity dedicated to Isis, were celebrated.

On October 12th the ancient festivity of Fontinalia is celebrated. This festivity is dedicated to Fons/Fontus (son of Janus) and it is linked to springs and wells where invisible waters become visible. Springs, fountains and wells are decorated with wreaths and flowers are put in the rivers.

It is important to note the use of flowers to celebrate the rituals of Fontinalia: the flower is the symbol of transient beauty and impermanence of the existence.

This festivity is however rather complex, with more profound meanings than one can expect. This festivity sacralizes a relevant aspect of water as fons et origo, or primordial element which embraces all the potential manifestations of the existence.

The most relevant aspect of Fontinalia (invisible/visible waters) is thus the sacralization of an element which precedes any form and any creation. This cycle "invisible/visible" corresponds to the relation immersion/emersion: emersion is the cosmogonical act of the manifestation while immersion is a dissolution. Thus water (a regeneration element) evidences the cycle life/death.

Moreover, water, preceding creation, has its own "aquatic" symbology (i.e. the shell). Water is linked to the Female Polarity, the Moon, the Matter, the Undifferentiated Life.

Water (and its primordial features) connotes any "humid" and indefferentiated principle: it's important to note the symbology of the "Flowing Waters" and the "Iced Waters", the symbology of the "Flow" and the "Descending Principle". The cycle and the "Becoming" described by the water are linked to the complex symbolgy of Janus.

All this is therefore what we must have in mind when celebrating the rites of Fontinalia.

12 Ottobre: Fontinalia

Il mese di Ottobre anticamente era connotato da alcune feste molto importanti: innanzitutto i Ludi Augustales (7 - 13) ed i Ludi Capitolini (15). I primi ricordavano il Divo Augusto (sarà importante affrontare il concetto di Divus distinto da quello di Deus). I Ludi Capitolini ricordavano la cacciata dei Galli dal Campidoglio. Altrettanto importante è sottolineare che queste festività venivano celebrate con dei Ludi ovvero con manifestazioni legate alla Vittoria.

Molto più complessa è la celebrazione dell'October Equus che non può essere effettuata in questa sede.

Da ricordare poi i Meditrinalia del 10 Ottobre ovvero feste "curative": durante questa festività si libava con vino nuovo e si pronunciava la seguente formula "novum vinum libo, novo veteri morbo medeor" (libo con vino nuovo affinchè il nuovo curi i vecchi mali).

Il 19 ottobre si svolgeva poi l'Armilustrium ovvero, poichè si concludeva l'anno militare iniziato il 9 marzo, si purificavano le armi e le si riponevano nel Tempio di Marte fino al successivo 1 marzo.

Il 28 si svolgevano le Isia ovvero la festa di Iside.

Una festa molto antica e molto sentita era quella delle Fontinalia del 12 ottobre in onore di Fons/Fontus figlio di Giano. Questa festività si lega alle fonti e sorgenti delle acque invisibili e che diventano visibili. Le sorgenti, i pozzi e le fontane venivano decorate con corone di fiori e si gettavano fiori nei fiumi nei pressi delle sorgenti.

Questa festività è in realtà molto più complessa di quanto possa apparire ad uno sguardo superficiale. In questa festività si sacralizzava un aspetto molto importante dell'acqua in quanto fons et origo, ovvero elemento primordiale che raccoglie in sè tutte le potenzialità dell'esistenza.

L'aspetto più rilevante delle Fontinalia (acque visibili/invisibili) è quindi la sacralizzazione di ciò che precede qualsiasi forma e di ciò che precede ogni creazione. Questa ciclicità visibile/invisibile corrisponde al rapporto immersione/emersione: l'emersione è l'atto cosmogonico della manifestazione mentre l'immersione rappresenta una dissoluzione. L'acqua (elemento di rigenerazione) quindi evidenzia il ciclo vita-morte.

Allo stesso modo si presti attenzione all'uso dei fiori per la celebrazione di questa festività: il fiore rappresenta la bellezza fugace e l'impermanenza dell'esistenza.

L'acqua inoltre poichè precede la creazione dispone di una simbologia specifica "acquatica".(ad esempio la conchiglia). Le acque sono connesse alla Polarità Femminile, alla Luna, alla Materia, alla vitalità indifferenziata

La primordialità dell'acqua connota ogni principio "umido", indifferenziato: si rifletta sulla simbologia delle Acque Fluenti e delle Acque Gelate, sulla simbologia della "Corrente", e sul principio "discendente". La ciclicità ed il divenire espresso dalle Acque si lega pertanto alla complessa simbologia di Giano.

Questo pertanto è ciò che dobbiamo tenere presente nello svolgimento dei riti delle Fontinalia.

Festivities: sense and meaning

The Traditional Roman Religion is a Festive Religion by definition.

In order to understand such concept it can be useful to remind the focal role of the Sacred Time based on a mystical-mythical-religious "sense of phases". At a first level this sense is linked to the great periods of life, to the cyclical changes, to the "decisive passages of value". At a higher level peculiar macro and micro cosmic transition phases and life subdivisions can be identified: these phases must be marked through cults and rites and they must be evidenced along the uniform course of the becoming. It is important also to remind the traditional definition of Cosmos as the reality of the world in a defined phase which embraces the validity of a defined spiritual order.

The Sacred Calendar is based on these principles.

A biological time and phases are accompanied by Cosmic Time and Phases. These phases are observed and recorded. This sense of the phases which characterizes the Cosmic dynamic (both at macro and micro level) identifies some peculiar moments: religion highlights these moments evolving this sense into a "sense of festivity". A festivity is thus a specific mark in the Sacred Time, a demarcation between two ordinary conditions of time.

A Traditional Festivity, to become as such, must be something absolutely discriminating. Thanks to rites, some acts can be made which must be peceived and executed in a level of the human existence completely different from the ordinary one. These rites and acts, when deprived of this spirit, are totally out of the festivity sphere losing consequently their meaning.

In order to attribute a meaning and a sense to certain acts, they must be executed only "festivelly", only on this different level. It implies a personal inner need of elevation towards this level otherwise a festivity is "dead" and grotesque: without a sense of festivity, there's no festivity.

The sense of festivity is not always joyful: it can be also sad or serious.

Festivities in the traditional Roman Religion are never forms of entertainment because they are and remain an absolute "discrimination".

Feste: senso e significato

La Religione Tradizionale Romana è una religione Festiva per definizione.

Per comprendere questo aspetto è bene ricordare l'importanza della sacralità del Tempo che si fonda su un "senso delle fasi" mistico-mitico-religioso. Ciò si esplica ad un primo livello con i grandi periodi della vita, ai cambiamenti ciclici, ai "passaggi di valore decisivi". Ad un livello più elevato si identificano delle fasi di transizione e suddivisioni nella vita del macrocosmo e del microcosmo che vengono "segnate" mediante il culto e devono essere fatte risaltare nel corso uniforme del divenire.

Si ricordi inoltre la definizione tradizionale del termine Cosmo ovvero la realtà del Mondo in un determinato stadio, che racchiude in sè la validità di un certo ordine spirituale.

Su questi principi si fonda il Calendario Sacro.

Esiste quindi un tempo biologico e delle fasi biologiche così come esiste un Tempo Cosmico e delle fasi cosmiche. Queste fasi vengono osservate e "annotate". Il senso delle fasi che connota il movimento del Cosmo (macro e micro) contraddistingue alcuni momenti: la religione opera questa evidenziazione trasformandolo in un senso di festività. La festa è quindi un segno nel Tempo Sacro, una demarcazione fra due condizioni "ordinarie"

La Festa Tradizionale, per essere realmente tale, deve essere qualcosa di assolutamente discriminante. Grazie ai riti, si compiono degli atti che devono essere percepiti e compiuti ad un livello dell'esistenza umana completamente diverso da quello ordinario. Questi riti e questi atti se privi di questo spirito sono fuori dalla sfera della festività e perdono quindi di senso.

Certi atti, per avere senso, possono essere pertanto compiuti solo festivamente, solo su questo piano diverso: ciò implica un'interiore personale necessità di elevazione fino a questo piano altrimenti la festa è morta e grottesca: senza senso di festività non c'è festa.

Il senso di festività non è necessariamente un senso gioioso: esso può essere anche triste o serio.

Le feste nella Religione tradizionale Romana pertanto non sono mai forme di intrattenimento perchè sono e restano un discrimine assoluto.

The Temple

"Normal" places are sacred places, usually inhabited by forces having precise meanings: this condition makes them spaces qualitatively different from profane and not-sacred sites. Sacred places thus express a Sacred Geography (having nothing in common with the conventional geography) rotating around fixed focal points, Centres, "omphalos" providing "orientation".

Sacred Geography is based on the concept of Sacred Space which is essentially "experience", primarily with the Divine: any place is thus a qualitative experience.

These assumptions are the fundamentals of the concept of Temple (Templum). The Temple is a sacred space limited bya Pontifex or an Augur with a lituus on the ground, water, air or underground where a Divine presence is acknowledged (Original Temple). Therefore, the Temple is a qualitatively different space from the environment around it whose ideal trail separates two spaces indicating the distance between two different ways of being. Its gate indicates the border and the communication point between these two worlds. Please note that the Temple's gate has its own "Guardians": the gate always represents a "passage" (Janus)

Inside, the Temple has an "axial point" or an ideal open point for the communication with the Deities: for this reason the Temple must be ideally open and some of them can become a "Gods'/Goddesses' Gates" or a direct contact point between Earth and Sky.

Noboy (neither a Pontifex nor an Augur) can choose a sacred place or a Temple: they can rather discover, through specific signs, if a place is a sacred site. A sign may appear after a legum dictio (sign request) and this may indicate that this sacred place, limited by a Temple (as a space for the signs' observation), may receive signs from a numen.

The Temple is a quadrilateral oriented space (simbology of the quadrilater-square) in the same time the Temple becomes an orientation tool. It becomes a Centre. Circular Templee have different meanings (simbology of the circle).

After positive responses of the legum dictio, the Temple will follow the inauguratio, consecratio and dedicatio process.

Inauguratio: the Augur or Pontifes have made precise questions requiring just "yes" or "not" through natural signs. The question and the interpretation of the sing(s) must be ritually made at the entrance of a tent (tabernaculum) or over a mat placed at the centre of the sacred quadrilater, which has been limited with a lituus, in the point where the two oriented axes of this space cross each other. Iron or knots must be absent and it must be a prevalence of White.

When lacking signs, the consultation is postponed to a more favourable day.

Consecratio: the Pontifix, touching the temple's door declares the sollemnia pontificalis carminis verba or the ritual formulas requested for the consecratio.

In case of presence of signs, they must be interpreted and acknowledged (not all signs are augural signs - superstitio): after that it is necessary to understand which force (numen) sends these signs to "name" the God/Goddess to who commit and assign the Temple (dedicatio). The dedicatio is expressed by the Pontifex with a precise ritual formula (precatio).

Over an Original Temple is also possible to create a Sacred Building which must have some essential ritual elements for example:

Sacred Foundations (consecrated separately because they sink into the Inferi World)
the Corner Stone (with the related simbology and ritual)
the Columns (they represent the sacred trees each of which inhabited by a specific God/Goddess: their number must comply with the sacred numerology)
the Stair (simbology of the Stair - elevation - and related sacred numerology for the steps)
the Altar (for the sacrifices and the offers: libatio)
the Perimetrical Walls (they represent the atmosphere)
the Ceiling (it represents the Sky)
the Gate (and related simbology - Janus)
the Axial Point (opening)

The Temple may host the symbols pertaining the God/Goddess: for the popular religion it can host also a statue of the God/Goddess (to be avoided when possible)

Tutti i luoghi "normali" sono sacri, abitati da forze e dotati di precisi significati: ciò li rende qualitativamente diversi dagli spazi profani e non consacrati. I luoghi sacri esprimono una Geografia Sacra (che non ha nulla a che vedere con la geografia convenzionale) che ruota intorno a punti fissi, a Centri, ad "omphalos" che forniscono un "orientamento".

La Geografia Sacra si fonda su un concetto di Spazio Sacro che è essenzialmente "esperienza", primariamente con il Divino: i luoghi sono quindi esperienze qualtitative eccezionali.

Su questi presupposti si basa il concetto di "Tempio" (Templum). Esso è uno spazio sacro delimitato da un Pontefice o da un Augure per mezzo di un lituo sul suolo, nell'acqua, nell'aria o nel sottosuolo dove viene riconosciuta la presenza di un Dio/Dea (Tempio Originario). Il Tempio è uno spazio qualitativamente diverso dall'ambiente che lo circonda il cui tracciato ideale separa due spazi che indicano la distanza fra due modi di essere: la sua soglia indica la frontiera ed il punto di comunicazione fra questi due mondi. Da ricordare che la soglia del tempio ha i suoi "custodi" e la porta rappresenta sempre un "passaggio" (Giano).

Il Tempio conserva al suo interno un punto "assiale" ovvero l'apertura ideale per la comunicazione con il Divino: il Tempio deve essere sempre idealmente "aperto" ed alcuni di essi possono divenire "Porta degli Dei/Dee" cioè punti di contatto fra la Terra ed il Cielo.

Gli uomini (nemmeno un Pontefice od un Augure) non possono scegliere un luogo sacro o un tempio: lo possono semmai scoprire per mezzo dei segni che rivelano la sacralità di un luogo. Un segno si può manifestare a seguito di una legum dictio (richiesta di un segno) e ciò può indicare che quel luogo sacro delimitato dal Tempio (come spazio di osservazione di segni) può accogliere segni di un numen.

Il Tempio è uno spazio "quadrilatero" orientato (simbologia del quadrato-quadrilatero): allo stesso tempo esso diventa strumento di orientamento. Diventa un Centro.

Quando è circolare assume un significato diverso (simbologia del cerchio).

Dopo l'esito positivo della legum dictio il Tempio deve essere sottoposto ad inauguratio, consecratio e dedicatio.

Inauguratio: l'Augure o il Pontefice hanno posto domande precise che richiedono un "sì" o un "no" che richiedono risposte che si manifestano con segni naturali. La domanda e l'interpretazione del/i segno/i avviengono ritualmente all'ingresso di una tenda (tabernaculum) o sulla stuoia collocata al centro del quadrilatero sacro che è stato delimitato con il lituo nel punto in cui si incrociano i due assi orientati di questo spazio. Non devono essere presenti ferro o nodi e deve esserci una prevalenza del colore Bianco.

In caso di assenza di segni si rimanda la consultazione a giorno più propizio.

Consecratio: il Pontefice toccando uno stipite della porta pronuncia le sollemnia pontificalis carminis verba ovvero le formule prescritte per la consecratio.

In caso di presenza di segni, essi devono essere interpretati e riconosciuti (non tutti i segni sono augurali - superstitio): quindi bisogna capire a quale forza (numen) appartengono questi segni per "nominare" il Dio/Dea cui affidare il Templum (dedicatio). La dedicatio viene espressa con un formula precisa (precatio) dal Pontefice

Sul Tempio Originario è anche possibile costruire un edificio sacro che presenta alcuni elementi essenziali come ad esempio:

le Fondamenta Sacre (che devono essere consacrate separatamente poichè affondano nel Mondo Infero)
la Pietra Angolare (e relativa simbologia e rituale)
le Colonne (rappresentano gli alberi sacri ciascuno abitato da una Divinità specifica: il loro numero deve quindi seguire la numerologia sacra)
la Scala (simbologia della "scala" - elevazione - e relativa numerologia sacra per i gradini)
l'Ara/Altare (per lo svolgimento dei sacrifici e le offerte: libatio)
i Muri Perimentrali (rappresentano l'atmosfera)
il Soffitto (rappresenta la volta celeste)
la Porta (simbologia del passaggio invocazione a Giano)
il Punto assiale (apertura)

Il Tempio può raccogliere i simboli pertinenti il Dio/Dea: per la religione popolare si può anche pensare ad una statua raffigurante il Dio o la Dea (da evitare tuttavia quando è possibile).

Esistono molti Templi originali e naturali e Templi Edifici che sono stati anticamente consacrati dagli antichi auguri e pontefici secondo i riti autentici ed originari.

Per quanto riguarda i Templi Edifici, molti di essi sono solo "ombre" o in rovina, alcuni sono chiusi ed usati come attrazione turistica, ed ad altri sono stati sovrapposti delle chiese cristiane. In quest'ultimo caso bisogna fare molta attenzione: soprattutto nel caso delle basiliche romaniche. Questa sovrapposizione non è solo architettonica: spesso queste chiese conservano un gran numero di simboli tradizionali tali da farle sembrare dei Templi Tradizionali "camuffati" da chiesa.

Ai nostri Templi dovrebbe essere garantita pari dignità religiosa e tutela sia pubblica che da parte degli Antichi Credenti. Prossimamente fornirò indicazioni per alcuni di questi siti.

Traditional Symbols: the Double Spiral

Approaching to Gods/Goddesses implies the adoption of a "language" totally different from the profane one used by "common people". This language is mainly composed of symbols pertaining the Sacred Science: a knowledge of these symbols thus allows an articulation and understanding of this language to communicate with Deities.

This knowledge is essential also to correctly perform, with their more profound and real sense and meaning, to rites, even those simpler, which otherwise remain only a series of meaningless acts and formulas.

Acknowledging the traditional symbols allows also to see the world with different eyes and sight. Maybe this knowledge, in its deepest articulation, is not possible for all, but just the capability to see them with their basic meaning is an important step to create a personal awareness, a first step towards the "awakening".

Here it is not possible to analyze these symbols in detail, but rather to provide some interpretative keys to see them, placing them into their proper dimension.

A first important symbol in the Traditional Roman Religion is surely the Double Spiral.

This symbol is very diffused and profane people consider it just an ornamental and decorative element.

The Double Spiral represents "the Manifestation under its double aspect". It describes the complete development of a Cycle (i.e. Birth and Death), evolution and involution: it is the representation of the Universal Force unraveling from two Poles spooled by the spirals.

The Double Spiral shows many similarities with the symbol of yin-yang because it identifies two opposite and complementary forces or the double action of a single Force. Other similarities may be found with the Caduceus, Dioscures or the two figures with the snake in the Lararium.

The circles described by the spirals represent also the celestial and infernal circles (superior and inferior status respect to the human dimension), previous and future cicles, ascending an descending processes, manifested and non-manifested spheres.

The spiral describes a "spiritus" or a "breath": universal aspiration and expiration (solve et coaugula). All this involves both the macrocosmic and the microcosmic dimensions.

The Double Spiral thus is the symbol showing us the essentials of the Great Law governing the whole Universe.

Simboli Tradizionali: la Doppia Spirale

Avvicinarsi agli Dei/Dee implica l'uso di un linguaggio totalmente diverso da quello profano utilizzato dagli uomini e dalle donne "comuni". Questo linguaggio è principalmente composto da simboli appartenenti alla Scienza Sacra: la conoscenza di questi simboli permette quindi di articolare e comprendere questo linguaggio per comunicare con il Divino.

Questa conoscenza permette inoltre di attrbuire un senso ed un significato reale ai riti, anche quelli più semplici, che altrimenti sarebbero solo una serie di di gesti e formule privi di senso.

Riconoscere i simboli tradizionali consente di vedere il mondo con altri occhi. Non tutti possono arrivare alla comprensione completa e profonda del significato di questi simboli, ma già il fatto di poterli riconoscere è un primo passo verso la creazione di una consapevolezza personale, un primo passo verso il "risveglio".

In questa sede non è possibile analizzare in dettaglio il significato di questi simboli, ma è possibile fornire qualche chiave interpretativa per riconoscerli e collocarli nella loro dimensione.

Un primo simbolo fondamentale nella Religione Tradizionale Romana è certamente .quello della Doppia Spirale.

Questo simbolo è molto diffuso e i profani lo scambiano per un motivo ornamentale e decorativo.

La Doppia Spirale rappresenta "la Manifestazione sotto il suo duplice aspetto". Essa descrive lo svolgimento completo di un Ciclo (ad es. nascita e morte), l'evoluzione e l'involuzione: è la rappresentazione della Forza Universale che si dipana da due Poli avvolti dalle spirali.

La Doppia Spirale presenta molte analogie con il simbolo orientale dello yin-yang poichè anche in questo caso si identificano due forze opposte, ma complementari ovvero la duplice azione di un'unica Forza. Altra simlitudine può essere trovata con il Caduceo, con i Dioscuri, con le due figure presenti insieme al serpente arrotolato nel Larario.

I cerchi descritti dalle spirali indicano inoltre i cerchi celesti e quelli infernali (stati superiori e inferiori rispetto a quello umano), i cicli precedenti e successivi, ascesa e discesa, manifesto-non manifesto.

La spirale descrive uno "spiritus" ovvero un soffio: espirazione e aspirazione universale (solve et coaugula). Ciò si manifesta nel macrocosmo così come nel microcosmo.

La Doppia Spirale quindi è il simbolo che ci parla della legge che governa l'Universo.

Il nome di questo mese deriva dal fatto che era il settimo mese dell'antico calendario del Re Numa che iniziava a Marzo.

Il mese è dedicato a Giove (Iuppiter significa "Dio Padre") e rappresenta la sacralizzazione dell'Autorità con una forte connotazione sociale e pubblica, come avviene per la sua polarità femminile Giunone.

Giove pertanto rappresenta lo Stato e l'istituzione famigliare. Rappresenta come energia il cielo, la pioggia, la neve, il fulmine, il tuono e la rugiada.

Gli animali sacri di Giove sono l'aquila e l'avvoltoio.
La pianta sacra a Giove è la quercia. Giove può manifestarsi attraverso il fruscio delle fronde delle querce.

The original name of this month is Sextilis because it was the 6th month in the Ancient Calendar. Then it was named Augustus in honor of the Emperor Augustus.

The name "Augustus" is avery complex term: just thinking to the fact that the prefix "aug" connotates also names like "augur" or "augurium". In any case it evidences a polarization of energy.
This month is dedicated to harvest, storage and conservation (in a broader sense).

In particular August is dedicated to the Goddess Diana or the female polarity of Apollo.

Diana is defined as "Always Distant": she is a non-urban Goddess because she represents the sacralization of woods, forrests and wild places.

Her frantic dance, reserved only to women, is named "Ridda".

During the day Diana protects wild animals preserving their lives; during the night she hunts them giving them Death. In this way Diana embodies both Life and Death as deriving from an unique source.

Sacred animals to Diana are: lion, bear, deer, quail and hunting dog.

As Apollo is represented by the Sun, Diana is represented by the Moon. Her main symbol is the Bow representing the crescent moon and the "wild weapon".

Il nome originale di questo mese è Sextilis poichè era il sesto mese del calendario antico. Venne denominato Augustus in onore dell' Imperatore Ottaviano Augusto.

Il termine "Augustus" è molto complesso: basti pensare che la particella "aug" si ritrova in denominazioni come "augur", "augurium". In tutti i casi rappresenta una polarizzazione di energia.

Il mese è dedicato alla raccolta e alla conservazione. In particolare il mese è dedicato a Diana ovvero la polarità femminile di Apollo.

Diana viene definita come la "Sempre Lontana": si tratta di una Dea non-urbana poichè rappresenta la sacralizzazione dei boschi, delle foreste e dei luoghi selvaggi.

La sua danza sacra, riservata esclisivamente alle donne, è la "Ridda".

Durante il giorno Diana protegge gli animali selvatici e ne preserva la vita; durante la notte Diana va a caccia di animali selvatici e ne apporta la morte. In questo modo questa Dea impersonifica sia la vita che la morte come unica sorgente.

Gli animali sacri di Diana sono: la quaglia, il leone, l'orso, il cervo ed il cane da caccia.

Come Apollo è rappresentato dal Sole, Diana è rappresentata dalla Luna. Il suo simbolo principale è l'Arco che rappresenta la Falce di Luna e "l'arma selvaggia".

The House

The House, in the Traditional Roman Religion, has a strong symbolic meaning and an important sacred value. This is a very complex issue, difficult to be discussed here. Nonetheless I will briefly cite some relevant topics.

It is thus rather difficult to describe all the religious implications linked to the house. Yet it's important just to mention that the house is the site where a family lives. A family is sacred and ritually linked to Vesta: consequently the house is sacred to Vesta.

All the sacred sites to Vesta (templum) are named "houses" having always a circular shape: the houses of Vesta are not-oriented sites where the shape and figure of a circle is the Cosmos description, the Universe. From these first conclusions is already quite evident that the house is simbolically linked to the Universe, to Cosmos in opposition to Chaos. The House is thus a protection from Chaos.

The House is also a sacred private space of the private familiy rites and cults: from libatio to the meals, etc. The house is the place where the Lares Domestici are placed.

As already mentioned, the house has some complex sacred values because it has to be considered a structured sacred space where the family is in constant contact and communicate with the Deities. The house is a sacred space structured around a "centre": the house, like the "house of Vesta" whose centre is a sacred fire, is the representation of Cosmos. House and Cosmos are thus the same.

For this reason, like the Cosmos has an ideal centre, an immobile Pillar around which the Universe rotates (the relation stability-movement: simbology of the Wheel and the Tree), similarly the house has its own Centre. The poet Homer describes that the House of Ulysses has been built around a great tree: the pillar of the House-Cosmos.

In a house, according to the Traditional Roman Religion, the centre is represented by the altar of the Gods Penates. The Penates (Poenus) are the Gods of the Centre and their place is the Centre of the House.

A traditional house must also have an upper opening in order to make possible the communication and the passage to the superior dimension (Sky-Earth-Man/Woman). If we look at the Pantheon in Rome, which is a summa of the entire ancient symbology, we can see that this upper opening is well represented by the Pantheon's Eye.

Our houses sumbolically communicate with the superior dimension through the "smoke path" or the chimney.

The Ancient roman houses (domus) are an important representation of the sacred function of communication and passage in a traditional house. These houses were characterized by the so called "broken roof": the house was closed towards the outside but it was completely open towards the sky through a great central opening in the roof. In a profane sense, this opening could be used to collect the rain into the impluvium, but it had a ritual role to allow a direct contact with the Superior Dimension connecting the house to the Universe, the Transcendence.

The modern houses, as anything else, cannot transmit any religious experience. They have no symbolic openings towards the Universe. The modern house is finally deprived of its sacred function and reduced to a mere structural expression.

It's up to us to reverse such a condition.

La Casa

Anche la casa, nella Religione Tradizionale Romana, ha un forte significato simbolico ed una importante valenza sacra. Si tratta di questioni piuttosto complesse che, in questa sede per brevità, accennerò in modo sintetico.

E' infatti molto difficile descrivere tutte le implicazioni "sacre" della casa: basta pensare che essa è in primo luogo la sede di una famiglia che è, per definizione, consacrata a Vesta. I luoghi sacri a Vesta si chiamano infatti "case" e sono di forma circolare: sono luoghi non orientati in cui la forma geometrica del cerchio descrive il Cosmo, l'Universo. Già da questo si deve cominciare a capire che la casa simbolicamente è legata in qualche modo al Cosmo.

La casa resta uno spazio sacro privato dove si svolgono i riti privati della famiglia: dalla libatio al consumo dei pasti, ecc... E' il luogo dove vengono ospitati i Lares Domestici.

Come già accennato, la casa detiene delle valenze sacre più complesse perchè di fatto essa è uno spazio sacro strutturato dove la famiglia è in contatto e comunicazione costante con gli Dei/Dee. La casa è infatti uno spazio sacro strutturato intorno ad un "centro": essa, come le "case di Vesta" è una riproduzione e rappresentazione del Cosmo. Casa e Cosmo si identificano.

Per questo, come il Cosmo possiede un Centro ideale, un Pilastro immobile intorno al quale ruota l'Universo (rapporto stabilità-movimento: simbologia della ruota e dell'albero), allo stesso modo la casa ha un suo centro. Omero descrive la casa di Ulisse costruita intorno ad un grande albero: il pilastro della casa-Cosmo.

Nella casa della Religione Tradizionale Romana il centro della casa è rappresentato dall'altare agli Dei Penati. I Penati (Poenus) sono gli Dei del Centro ed il loro sito è il centro della casa.

Una casa tradizionale deve avere un'apertura superiore per rendere possibile la comunicazione ed il passaggio alla dimensione superiore (Cielo-Terra-Uomo). Se osserviamo il Pantheon a Roma, che è la summa di tutta la simbologia antica, osserveremo che questa apertura è ben rappresentata dall'Occhio del Pantheon.

Le nostre case comunicano simbolicamente con la dimensione superiore tramite "il percorso del fumo" ovvero il "camino" (notare in italiano il nesso camino-cammino).

Le antiche Domus Romane sono una importante rappresentazione architettonica della funzione sacra di comunicazione e passaggio della casa tradizionale. Esse infatti erano caratterizzate dal cosiddetto "tetto spezzato": la casa era chiusa verso l'esterno, ma aperta verso l'intero e verso il Cielo tramite una grande apertura centrale del tetto. Essa, in senso profano, magari poteva anche servire a far confluire l'acqua piovana nell'impluvium, ma aveva lo scopo rituale di consentire un contatto diretto della casa e della sua famiglia con il Mondo Sovrumano e collegare la casa con il Cosmo, la Trascendenza.

Le case moderne, come tutto del resto, non veicolano alcuna esperienza religiosa, non hanno aperture simboliche verso il Cosmo: la casa è depauperata del suo significato sacro e degradata a mera espressione architettonica.

Sta a noi cambiare tutto questo.

L'antico nome di questo mese è Quintilis poichè era il quinto mese dell'antico calendario di Numa che iniziava a Marzo. In seguito venne chiamato Julius in onore di Giulio Cesare.

Apollo viene associato al Sole: viene anche definito come "colui che esiste senza dipendere dagli eventi del Mondo", "colui che sta in disparte", "l'astratto" o "il sempre lontano".

Gli animali sacri ad Apollo sono: il cigno, il lupo, il cervo e soprattutto il delfino.
Le piante e gli alberi sacri ad Apollo sono: il cipresso, il giacinto e l'alloro.

An Ancient Beliver cannot even imagine that Deities can have human appearance: arms, legs, long beards, cloths, etc. Anthropomorphous representations, typical in statues, are popular figurations in which finally mankind represents and beatifies itself.

Deities can be perceived and they can be represented by their sacred symbols. All this is passed on and described by Myths. Myths are not fairy tales or legends: they are sacred stories directed to reveal a "mystery" focused on Gods and Goddesses or Heroes and Ancestors. A myth describes a sacred reality happened in illo tempore, ab origine.

Myths describe sacred realities becauses what is sacred is what is real by definition because it has an exemplary model. What is profane has no exemplary models.

In this way, for example agricultural works are sacred activities becaused based on rites revealed by the Divine through a myth. Today agriculture is not a sacred activity being a profane act because based only on the land exploitation for economic purposes, only to produce food, to gain money. Deprived by its sacred meaning, agriculture becomes a bleak and non-sense activity: the effects of such a change are evident to us everyday.

These considerations can be extented to all the human activites in the contemporary society: anything is completely deprived by any religious meaning. We are making only profane acts. and no God or Goddess or Ancestor has never revelaed a profane act.

Anything linked to a myth is sacred: what is made by mankind is profane and not real. The more man/woman is religious, the more he/she is comform to exemplary models inspired by the Divine: the more a man/woman is religious, the more he/she becomes real. It's a form of progressive awaking.

This is maybe the aim and the meaning of any myth: they drive us towards the sacred sphere and therefore in the sphere of reality within a Sacred Space and Time. Myths create exemplary ethical models giving a sense both to physiological events (i.e. food and nutrition) and social functions (politics, economy, etc.)

When undertaking the Via on the one hand, imitating Gods and Goddesses, we remain in a sacred dimension. On the other hand, with a ritualization of acts and gestures, we sacralize the World and, with our religious behaviour, we contribute to defend the sacralization of the World itself.

Nessun antico credente può credere che le divinità abbiano sembianze umane, con braccia, barba, vestiti... La rappresentazione antropomorfa tipica delle statue è una figurazione popolare in cui alla fine l'uomo raffigura e beatifica sè stesso.

Le Divinità si percepiscono e si rappresentano tramite i simboli che sono loro propri. E tutto questo è tramandato e descritto dai miti. I miti non sono leggende o storie: sono racconti sacri diretti a rivelare un mistero in cui i protagonisti sono gli Dei o le Dee o gli Eroi. Il mito descrive eventi avvenuti in illo tempore, ab origine.

Il mito tratta di realtà sacre perchè il sacro è il reale per eccellenza dato che possiede un modello esemplare. Il profano non ha alcun modello esemplare.

In tal modo il lavoro agricolo ad esempio è un'attività sacra perchè è un rito rivelato dal divino tramite un mito. Oggi il lavoro agricolo è un'attività desacralizzata: quindi è un'atto profano basato solo sullo sfruttamento della terra per fini economici, per nutrirsi, per guadagnare. Senza il suo significato religioso, il lavoro agricolo diventa squallido e privo di senso: e gli effetti li vediamo tutti i giorni.

Ciò vale per gran parte degli atti della società contemporanea che è completamente priva di simbolismo religioso. Svolgiamo solo atti profani. E nessun Dio o Dea o Antenato ha mai rivelato un atto profano.

Tutto quello che è legato al mito è sacro: ciò che è fatto solo dall'uomo è profano e irreale. Più l'uomo è religioso, più uniforma i suoi comportamenti a modelli esemplari ispirati dal Divino: più l'uomo è religioso, più diventa reale. E' una forma di risveglio.

Questo è lo scopo ed il senso più profondo del mito: spingerci nel sacro e quindi nel reale di uno Spazio ed un Tempo Sacro. I miti creano modelli etici esemplari che danno un senso sia ad eventi fisiologici (ad es. l'alimentazione) sia a funzioni sociali (politica, attività marziale, ecc...).

Rimanendo sulla Via da un lato, imitando gli Dei e le Dee, ci manteniamo nel sacro. Dall'altro, con la ritualizzazione di gesti ed azioni, sacralizziamo il Mondo e con il nostro comportamento religioso, contribuiamo a difendere la sacralizzazione del Mondo.

Libatio

LIbatio is the most common and immediate sacrificial act. It is important to note that a sacrifice, in the traditional roman religion, not always implies animal killings. On the contrary, the most ususal expression of sacrifice was and still is the libatio as superior bloodless manifestation of the inclination to sacrifice.

Sacrificium e Sacrificare mean "making sacred" or making a translation into the divine dimension and opening a link with the divine sphere. The central core of a sacrifice is the execution of a rite through which, with an offer, the destruction of dissolution of something is made in relation with an invisible entity.

According to Ovid, the term libatio derives from Liber or Dionysus: this God brought libatio as a tradition coming from the Vedas of Ancient India. Libamina are the offerings in the libatio. They are, in order of importance: wine (an offer from a plant), milk (an offer from an animal), water (an offer from Mother Earth). Nonetheless other kind of libamina (food, seeds, etc.) can be offered.

Libatio is a form of private sacrifice thus expressing a dissolution, "a destruction in order to have something". The most common gesture in a libatio is the pouring of a liquid into the fire or on the ground.

Any moment of the day may be good (fas) to make a libatio, but the main libationes are those of the morning and those of the evening (libatio before sleeping and libatio when the sacred light comes back). the normal everyday life can be considered as such (it means: sacred) when included, through a circular movement, between these two polarizing acts.

A libatio, according to the ancient rite deriving from the Vedas heritage, can be made pouring four spoons of milk (wine or water) into a bigger spoon and from this pouring milk into the fire or on the ground (twice). A kind of simpler libatio involves the pouring of four spoods of milk (or wine or water) into a bowl and, with a well stretched (left) arm, from this pouring milk (wine or water) on the ground (twice). Please remeber that during a libatio it's better not to hold iron objects or knots.

A libatio with water always implies a purification rite.

More complex rites or those involving important moments of a family life or the consacration of a site may imply more complex libationes: a libatio with wine first, then with milk and finally with water.

The ancient rite, deriving from the Vedas tradition, implies this formula: "the God/Goddess who draws this libatio, being grabbed by this libatio, take-support-fulfil the desire for which he/she draws it"

Please note that this formula, like others, can be expressed in silence, murmured or expressed aloud: there are great differences in this (mens and vox) I'll describe in the future.

From this, it is clear enough that libatio is an instrumental rite in order to create and have the support of the divine during the day course or during the making of some acts.

Libatio

La libatio è l'atto sacrificale più semplice e più immediato. E' opportuno ricordare che il sacrificio, nella religione tradizionale romana, non implica sempre uccisioni di animali. Al contrario la forma di sacrificio più frequente era e resta la libatio come massima espressione non cruenta dell'attitudine a sacrificare.

Sacrificium e Sacrificare vogliono dire "rendere sacro" ovvero muoversi nella dimensione del divino ed aprire un collegamento con la sfera del divino. L'essenza del sacrificio è lo svolgimento di un rito con cui si pratica, tramite un'offerta, la dissoluzione di qualcosa in relazione con una presenza invisibile.

Secondo Ovidio, il termine libatio deriva da Liber ovvero Dioniso: questo Dio avrebbe introdotto la libatio come tradizione proveniente dall'India Vedica. Libamina sono le offerte della libatio, principalmente, in ordine di importanza: vino (offerta da una pianta), latte, (offerta da un animale), acqua (offerta dalla Madre Terra). Tuttavia anche altre libamina possono essere offerte.

La libatio è una forma di sacrificio privato che esprime quindi una dissoluzione, "una distruzione per avere". Il gesto più comune della libatio è l'atto di versare un liquido nel fuoco o sulla terra. Qualunque momento della giornata può essere indicato per effettuare una libatio, ma le libatio principali sono la libatio del mattino e quella della sera (libatio quando ci si corica e libatio quando torna la sacra luce). La normale quotidianità (che quindi diventa sacra) si svolge, in un movimento circolare, all'interno di questi due atti polarizzanti.

La libatio, secondo il rito più antico di derivazione vedica, si svolge versando quattro cucchiai di latte (o vino o acqua) in un cucchiaio più grande e da questo si versa il latte nel fuoco o nella terra per due volte. Una forma di libatio più semplice prevede il versamento di quattro cucchiai di latte in una scodella e, con il braccio teso, si versa il contenuto sulla terra per due volte. E' opportuno non avere oggetti di ferro o nodi addosso durante lo svolgimento della libatio.

La libatio con acqua implica sempre un rito di purificazione.

I riti più complessi e che coinvolgono momenti importanti per la vita di una famiglia o la consacrazione di un luogo implicano libationes complesse: prima una libatio con vino, poi una con il latte e in ultimo con acqua.

La formula antica, derivata dalla tradizione vedica, prevede l'uso di queste parole: "la divinità che attinge questa libagione, essendo afferrata da questa libagione, accompagni-sostenga esaudisca il desiderio per il quale egli/ella l'attinge".

E' opportuno ricordare che questa formula, come molte altre, può essere detta in silenzio, mormorata o detta a voce alta: vi è una grande differenza fra queste espressioni (mens e vox) che descriverò in seguito.

Da questa formula si comprende chiaramente come la libatio sia un rito strumentale per fare in modo che l'officiante sia sostenuto dal divino durante il corso della giornata o per lo svolgimento di determinati atti.

La Seconda Triade

La Seconda Triade deve essere considerata come una sorta di evoluzione, verso una declinazione decisamente più popolare, della tripartizione della più alta espressione della manifestazione del divino. Per il significato del numero 3 ed il conseguente significato del concetto stesso di "triade" si faccia riferimento al mio precedente post sulla Prima Triade.

La Seconda Triade è composta da Giove, Giunone e Minerva.

Giove (cfr. la "Prima Triade")

Giunone

Giunone (Juno - polarità femminile) - Giove (Jupiter - polarità maschile)

Giunone è la sacralizzazione della "nascita" nel senso più ampio possibile e del parto: le Calende sono sacre a Giunone.

Come Giove, Giunone ha una lunga lista di appellativi (indicati negli Indigitamenta) tra i quali Juno Lucina (“Colei che porta i bambini alla luce”) è uno dei più importanti. La fecondità e tutto ciò che è espressione del femminile sono tipici aspetti sacri di Giunone.

Giunone è anche chiamata Regina per descrivere il suo ruolo quale Somma Autorità Femminile (in senso religioso, politico e magico). In tal modo il Pater Familias e la Mater Familias sono la rappresentazione umana dell'autorità di Giove/Giunone all'interno della famiglia. La suo denominazione di Juno Mater è qualcosa che va molto oltre il significato profano di "Madre" del senso comune: si faccia riferimento al significato della festa antica dei Matronalia.

Giunone è "Fecondità Sacra". Nello stesso tempo è Juno Sospita o polarità femminile delle attività marziali e militari. In questo modo si esalta ancora la triplice sfera funzionale di Giunone: autorità sacra, forza sacra e fecondità sacra.

Giunone è denominata anche “Juno Moneta” ovvero “Colei che amminisce" o “Colei che dà buoni consigli".

Gli anelli rotti ed i nodi sono oggetti particolarmente nefas quando si invoca o si fa riferimento a Giunone: allo stesso modo sono estremamente nefasti quando si entra in un luogo consacrato a Giunone.

Gli animali simbolo e sacri a Giunone sono: la cornacchia, l'oca, la giovenca bianca. Le piante sacre sono: la quercia e l'olivo

Minerva

Minerva (polarità femminile) – Poseidone poi Nettuno (nel lectisternium) (polarità maschile)

Antichissima divinità femminile italica il cui nome originale è Minerua. Essa è la sacralizzazione dell'abilità, della maestria, del lavoro manuale, del "saper fare", dell'attività intellettuale, della capacità pratica (sollertia). Minerva è anche "l'arte e l'intelligenza nella guerra e nelle discipline marziali", l'astuzia, la furbizia, l'intelligenza sottile, la ragione, l'invenzione ed il pensiero razionale.

Anche per questa ragione il suo tipico simbolo è l'armatura di bronzo proprio a simboleggiare la solidità e la forza "difensiva" del pensiero razionale.

Nel calendario antico, Minerva non disponeva di festività pubbliche specifiche tranne che per la giornata del 19 marzo: artificum dies. Per questa ragione Minerva è oggetto principalmente di culti privati. Gli artigiani e le "casalinghe" venivano chiamate "le mani di Minerva".

Gli animali simbolo e sacri a Minerva sono la civetta ed il cavallo. I suoi simboli sono l'armatura di bronzo, l'occhio, la vista. Altri simboli estremamente importanti sono il morso usato per i cavalli ed il timone proprio a simboleggiare il controllo della ragione sull'istinto e sulle forze incontrollate.

The Second Triad

The second Triad has to be considered a sort of evolution, towards a more popular declination, of the tripartite organization of the highest expression of the celestial divine manifestation. For the significance of the number 3 and the consequent meaning of the triad refer to my privious post about the first triad.

The second triad is composed of Jupiter, Juno and Minerva.

Jupiter (see "The Firts Triad")

Juno

Juno (Female polarity) - Jupiter (male polarity)

Juno is the sacralization of birth (in very broad sense) and delivery: Calendae are sacred to Juno.

Like Jupiter, Juno has a long list of appellations (Indigitamenta) among which Juno Lucina (“She taking child to the daylight”) is one of the most important. Fecundity and anything can be expression of “Feminine” are typical sacred aspects of Juno.

Juno is also Regina (Queen) to describe her role as Female (political, magical and religious) Authority. In this way a Pater Familias and a Mater Familias are the human representation of the Jupiter/Juno Authority within the family. Her denomination as Juno Mater is something more than “Mother” in the common sense just considering the important role of the ancient festivity of Matronalia. She is the sacred “Fecundity”. In the same time she is also Juno Sospita or the female polarity of war activities.

In this way Juno has a triple functional sphere: sacred authority, sacred force and sacred fecundity.

Juno is also named “Juno Moneta” or “She warning” or “She giving good advices”.

Broken rings or knots are particularly nefas when invoking Juno or when entering sites sacred to Her.

Sacred animal to Juno are: the crow, the goose, the white heifer. Sacred plants to Juno are: the oak and the olive tree.

Minerva

Minerva (female polarity) – Poseidon then Neptune (in the lectisternium) (male polarity)

Minerva is the sacralization of “craft” and “know-how”, any “intellectual activity”, the “practical skill” (sollertia). She is also “the art and intelligence of war”, the “Astuteness”, the “Reason”, the “Invention” and the “Rational Thought”. Also for this reason she is symbolized by a bronze shining armour (solidity of the rational thought).

In the Ancient Calendar there are no specific festivities dedicated to Minerva except for the march 19^th: the artificum dies. She has essentially private cults. Craftsmen are “the Minerva’s Hands”.

Sacred animals to Minerva are the owl and the horse. Her symbols are the bronze armour, the eye, the sight. Other important symbols are the bit and the rudder as symbols of rational control over savage and uncontrolled forces.

She is also defined as "she giving shapes".

E' definita inoltre come "colei che dà le forme".

Rome has been founded on 21st april 753 b.c. over the Palatine by Romolus with a rite based on the delimitation of the templum with a lituum, auspices' reading and interpretation, offering to Gods and to the Earth, delimitation of the sacred space with a lituum, construction of the pomerium (sacred border) traced on the ground with a plough's furrow, delimitation of the Via Sacra around the pomerium.

Through this rite Rome became not only a physical space, but also a metaphysical space where great energies and forces are concentrated. Rome is thus not only a "place" but also a "meta-place". Thanks to this consecration, or a translation into the Gods' dimension, Rome may be the center of other religions but it will remain the site of the Ancient Gods forever.

Costantinopolis is the only city in the world founded with the same rite.

21 Aprile: Natale di Roma

Il 21 aprile 753 a. c. Roma viene fondata sul Palatino da Romolo con un rito che ha previsto la delimitazione del templum con un lituo, lettura degli auspici, offerta agli Dei e alla Terra, delimitazione dello spazio sacro con il lituo, costruzione del pomerium tracciato nella Terra con un solco dell'aratro, delimitazione della Via Sacra intorno al pomerium.

Attraverso questo rito Roma diventa non solo uno spazio fisico, ma anche uno spazio metafisico dove si concentrano grandi energie naturali e forze. Roma quindi non è solo un luogo ma anche un meta-luogo. Grazie a questa consacrazione, ovvero una traslazione alla dimensione degli Dei, Roma potrà anche essere il centro di altre religioni, ma rimarrà sempre la dimora degli antichi Dei.

L'unica altra città al mondo fondata con il medesimo rito è Costantinopoli.

Giornata dedicata all'antica Dea Pale, Dea dei pastori, della pastorizia e delle greggi.

Giornata della purificazione durante la quale si offrono alla Dea e si consumano focacce e latte. Accensione notturna di fuochi di paglia. Anticamente il bestiame veniva fatto passare tre volte attraverso il fuoco come rito di purificazione.

La Sacralizzazione dello Spazio: Dei/Dee Superi, Dei/Dee Inferi

Nella Religione Tradizionale Romana il Tempo costituisce una dimensione sacra: questa sacralizzazione è materializzata dal Calendario che rappresenta una sorta di "mappa" per orientarsi attraverso i ritmi e le misure del tempo trascendente. In questo senso, il tempo non contiene fatti, ma "significati".

Allo stesso modo lo Spazio presenta due significati distinti, ma integrati. Da un lato si colloca il senso prettamente fisico dello spazio e la sua sacralizzazione avviene mediante la "personalizzazione" delle diverse materializzazioni dello spazio. Ogni luogo detiene una sua individualità, una sua specificità, una sua unicità ed identità. Il Genius Loci, i Lares Compitales, l'Anima Mundi e tutte le divinità di luoghi specifici sono l'epsressione più tipica di questo tipo di significato.

Dall'altro lato si colloca un senso più profondo e più complesso dotato di rilevanti implicazioni meta-fisiche.

Lo spazio celeste, quello terreno e quello sotterraneo, l'alto ed il basso, l'orizzontale ed il verticale, la destra e la sinistra ecc... sono tutte espressioni di un simbolismo complesso che è tradizionalmente rappresentato dal simbolismo della croce (direzione-orientamento, il "Dove"). Questo simbolismo, che è comune a tutte le religioni tradizionali, conferma proprio per questo fatto come esso sia fondamentalmente qualcosa di intimamente intrinseco alla Natura stessa piuttosto che una semplice e pura atrazione umana.

Qualsiasi direzione nello spazio presenta specifiche influenze ed ospita specifiche energie e forze che sono alla base della Scienza Augurale, l'orientamento sacro dei riti e lo stesso posizionamento ed orientamento dei templi e di tutti gli spazi sacri. La comprensione di questi elementi, attraverso un lungo e complesso studio non riducibile in questa sede, fornisce la possibilità di prolungare la dimensione materiale ed umana all'interno di una sfera più profonda e complessa.

Sia sufficiente sapere in questa sede che, come il tempo indica specifici momenti per l'effettuazione ad esempio di determinate azioni rituali (il "Quando"), allo stesso modo gli spazi ed i luoghi coinvolgeranno implicazioni specifiche più profonde rispetto alla semplice visuale profana. Alcuni riti devono essere svolti inluoghi elevati, altri in caverne o luoghi sotterranei, altri vicino all'acqua secondo quando previsto dalla Geografia Sacra che di fatto non implica mai delle scelte "soggettive": tutto questo deve essere fondamentalmente "coerente" con questa sfera meta-fisica.

Lo spazio è e rimane uno spazio vivente e vissuto in base alle sue specificità e peculiarità all'interno del quale gesti, parole, formule e segni hanno un valore e significato ben definito. Per questo per gli Antichi Credenti i luoghi sono tutti indistintamente spazi meritevoli di rispetto e di attenzione. Lo spazio per i rituali è comunque solo la "punta di un iceberg" di un più inteso significato di Spazio.

Questo senso più intenso si basa principalmente sulla tri-dimensionalità del valore verticale dello Spazio Sacro che si sovrappone alla tri-dimensionalità del Tempo Sacro. Questa simbologia sovrapposta si materializza, tra l'altro, nella sacralità del numero 3: le Triadi, le tre funzioni sacre, la simbologia del Tripode, il Tridente di Poseidone, ecc...

Il primo livello è connesso al "principio solare" (Supera, alto) non solamente in termini astronomici, ma principalmente in senso uranico, come "principio della luce splendente".

Il secondo livello è quello della "dimensione terrena" connessa alla dimensione umana e di tutti gli esseri viventi.

Il terzo livello è quello "sotterraneo" (Infera, basso) connesso all'oscurità.

La dimensione umana è quindi una dimensione intermedia fra quella Supera e quella Infera.

Le dimensioni Supera ed Infera sono gli estremi di due opposti: esse detengono una specifica ed opposta simbologia e pur essendo strettamente integrate non possono comunicare l'una con l'altra. La realtà del visibile e dell'esistente è di fatto il risultato dell'azione e del movimento di queste due dimensioni contrapposte ed interconnesse. Queste dimensioni posseggono forze ed energie che sono identiche ma contrapposte (ad es. Giove/Plutone, Fuoco Celeste/Fuoco Sotterraneo). Grazie alla loro azione i cicli della nascita, morte e rigenerazione continua (alla base dell'esistenza) possono avere luogo.

Le forze che caratterizzano queste dimensioni restano integrate. Se gli dei/Dee Superi sono espressione di un Cielo (metafisico) Splendente, gli Dei/Dee Inferi sono connessi alla Notte, all'oscurità, all'ombra, all'occulto e al segreto. Gli Dei/Dee Inferi sono sempre espressione e collegati alla "Crescita" (il simbolismo ad esempio del "seme custodito nelle mani sotterranee di Proserpina" da cui si svilupperà la pianta). Queste divinità, a differenza della credenza profana comune, sono la rappresentazione più vivida della fecondità naturale, dell'acqua e del fuoco sotterraneo come linfe vitali. Basta pensare ad esempio alla grande differenza fra Venere e Proserpina o le caratteristiche infernali di Cerere e di tutte le Grandi Madri.

Un altro aspetto importante da considerare è la relazione fra la dimensione infera e la Morte anche perchè questa relazione è fortemente influenzata da pregiudizi e incomprensioni.

Secondo la Tradizione, ogni uomo possiede il suo Genius così come ogni donna possiede la sua Juno (entrambi questi termini derivano dal Latino "generare". Questi sono la rappresentazione sacra di quelle forze vitali e generatrici che sostengono l'esistenza di ognuno, sostengono la stessa famiglia come concatenazione generazionale. La famiglia è sacralizzata da Vesta e dai Lari famigliari il cui sinbolo è il serpente (animale infernale tellurico). Genius/Juno sono forze di per sè impersonali che appartengono alla Natura, più precisamente alla dimensione infernale. La sede dei Lari è infatti simbolicamente situata sottoterra sottoposta all'influenza di un principio femminile: Mania, Mater Larum.

Con la morte, l'uomo e la donna perdono la loro personalità e, per un breve periodo di tempo, si riducono simbolicamente allo stato di "ombre" pallide a loro volta destinate ad estinguersi (seconda morte). Il principio essenziale della Morte è quindi la restituzione alla Natura di questa energia vitale che sarà utilizzata per generare altra vita: in questo modo si perpetua il ciclo stesso della vita. Per questo motivo i Lari sono coloro che "ci fanno vivere: essi alimentano il nostro corpo e regolano le nostre anime" (Microbio: Saturnalia). Per questo inoltre i Lari vengono identificati con gli Antenati, con la forza invisibile. Allo stesso modo sono la sacralizzazione della forza del "sangue" (come patrimonio familiare), della famiglia, della gens.

Ci sono poi coloro che non diventano ombre: sono coloro capaci di vincere la seconda morte. Essi sono “Divi/Divae”, gli "Svegliati" gli "Illuminati" i quali non sono Dei o Dee ma hanno comunque raggiunto un livello di vita più elevato e trascendente rispetto alla vita umana nel senso comune del termine.

Quindi, di fronte a noi si pongono due Vie. La prima è la "Via degli Inferi" in cui gli uomini e le donne restituiscono la loro energia vitale al mondo sotterraneo generatore. In questa Via la morte è "Divenire". La seconda è la Via degli "Dei/Dee Splendenti": questa è la Via degli Antenati in cui la Morte è "Sublimazione". La prima è legata all'oscurità, alla notte, ai sei mesi di discesa del Sole, alla Luna (Simbolo del Divenire), all'inumazione. Questa dimensione è legata alla Janua Inferi e alla Chiave d'Argento di Giano.

La Seconda è connessa alla luce splendente, al fuoco, al giorno, alla cremazione, ai sei mesi di ascensione del Sole: questa dimensione si lega alla Janua Coeli e alla Chiave d'Oro di Giano.

La Religione Tradizionale Romana è diretta a creare una consapevolezza ed una coscienza (a "svegliare dal sonno" e mantenere questo stato di veglia) per far prevalere la Via degli Antenati sulla Via degli Inferi. Questo vuole dire essere orientati verso un destino superiore e mantenere un contatto con il Divino secondo i principi indicati dagli Antichi.

Anche in questo caso, la Pluralità, il fenomeno delle "Due Nature", due ordini di Divinità così come di due differenti riti e culti emergono chiaramente.

The Sacralization of Space: Superi and Inferi Gods/Goddesses

In the Roman Traditional Religion, “Time” is a sacred sphere: this sacralization is embedded by the Calendar which represents a sort of “map” in order to have a direction through the rhythms and the measures of transcending time. In this perspective Time doesn’t contains “Facts”, but “Meanings”.

Similarly, “Space” has two main different but integrated meanings. The former is essentially a “physical” meaning and its sacralization is operated giving a personality and an individuality to the different spatial manifestations. Genius Loci, Lares Compitales and all the Deities of specific sites and places are the common representation of this kind of meaning. The latter shows some extremely complex meta-physical implications.

The celestial, the ground and the underground spaces, high and low, horizontal and vertical, left and right, etc. are all expressions of a complex symbolism which is traditionally represented by the “cross”. This symbolism, common in every traditional religion, confirms how it should be considered something intrinsic within Nature herself rather than a pure human invention.

Any direction in Space shows precise influences and hosts specific energies which are also at the base of the Augural Science, the sacred orientation of rites and the temples’ position itself. The understanding of these elements thus provides the possibility for a prolonging of the material and human dimension inside a more complex sphere.

As Time indicates specific moments for the making of given ritual actions, similarly the spaces, according to a traditional perspective, involve more complex implications and specificities compared to a simpler profane view. Some rites must be held in elevated places, others in caverns or underground sites according to a sacred geography which never implies subjective choices: they must coherent to a precise meta-physical sphere.

Space is always a living and lived place where, according to its peculiarities and specificities, gestures, words, formula and signs have a well defined value and meaning. Nonetheless, the space for rituals is only the “top of the iceberg” of the more intensive meaning of Space.

This intensive meaning is based on a tri-dimensional vertical value of the sacred space (to be highlighted the sacred value of the number “3”: triads, three sacred functions, symbology of the tripod, the Poseidon Trident, etc.). The first level is linked to the “solar principle” (Supera, high), not just in astronomical terms, but as “principle of shining light”, uranic. The second level is linked to the “ground level” connected to the human dimension and to the other living beings. The third one is linked to the “underground level” (Infera, low), connected to the darkness. Human dimension is thus placed in an intermediate position between a Supera Dimension and an Infera one.

These two dimensions (Supera and Infera) are at two opposite extremes: they have a specific and opposite symbology, they are integrated but they cannot communicate with each other. The reality of visible and living world is the result of the action and movement of these two different but interconnected dimensions and the related forces and energies which are identical, but in opposition (Jupiter/Pluto, celestial/underground fire).

Thanks to their action, the cycles of birth, life, death and continuing regeneration (at the base of the existence) may have place.

The forces characterizing these dimensions are thus interrelated and in opposition. If the Superi Gods/Goddesses are expression of a shining “coelum”, Inferi Gods/Goddesses are linked to the Night, darkness, shade, occult and secret. Inferi Gods/Goddesses have strong links with the growth (the symbol of the seed hold in the underground “hands of Proserpina”), natural fecundity, underground water and underground fire. Just to mention the great difference between Venus and Proserpina and the relevant Infernal characteristic of Ceres and the Great Mothers.

It is important to briefly analyze also the relations between the Infera Dimension and Death also because this relation has generated many prejudices and misunderstandings.

Every man has his own Genius as well as every woman has her own Juno (both deriving from the Latin term “generare” or “to generate”). These are vital and generating forces supporting the family (Lares) symbolized by the snake (infernal and telluric animal). This is an impersonal force which belongs to Nature, in particular to the Infernal Dimension. The seat of Lares is underground and they are under the influence of a feminine principle: Mania, Mater Larum.

Man/woman, when dying, loses his personality and he/she is reduced, for a short time, to be a “shade” which it will be extinguished as well (second death). The essential principle of the dead thus returns to Nature to be used again to generate other forms of life, as any other natural cycle of life. This is the reason why Lares are those “who make us live: they breed our body and regulate our souls” (Microbius: Saturnalia). This is the reason why they are also identified with the (dead) Ancestors, with an invisible force. Similarly they are also the sacralization of the force of the “blood”, the family, the gens.

There are also those who do not become shades: they can win the second death. They are “Divi/Divae”, the “Enlightened” who, not being however Gods/Goddesses, have achieved a higher and transcending life going beyond the human life in the common sense.

Therefore, two ways are in front of us. The former is the “Inferi path” where men/women temporarily return to give the vital energy back to the underground generating world. Here Death is “Becoming”. The latter is the path of the “Shining Gods/Goddesses”: this is the “Ancestors’ Via”. Here Death is sublimation. The former is linked to the darkness, the night, the six months of the solar descending, the Moon (symbol of Becoming), inhumation: this dimension is connected to the Janua Inferi and the Silver Key (Janus). The latter is linked to the shining light, fire, the daylight, the six months of the solar ascending, cremation: this dimension is connected to the Janua Coeli and the Gold Key (Janus)

The Traditional Roman Religion tends to create an aware consciousness in order to make the “Ancestors’ Via” prevail over the “Inferi path”: This means to be oriented towards a superior destiny and maintain a contact with the Divine according to the principles indicated by the Ancestors.

Even in this case, the phenomenon of “Two Natures”, two orders of Gods/Goddesses as well as two different and opposite rites and cults clearly emerge.

Fulgores

Fulgores (lightning) have a not secondary role for the Traditional Roman Religion both as physical-natural phenomenon and as symbolic element.

According to a physical-natural perspective, the lightning obeservation plays a peculiar importance because fulgores are a very powerful expression of Nature's Force. This obesrvation, as already mentioned for other kind of signa, is not aimed at the future prediction, fortune-telling or other forms of vulgar magic, but rather to keep us in a status of constant consciousness and awareness about role and position of humankind inside the world. This observation thus must contribute to keep us "awake" and aware about the Nature's Force.

The Fulgores discipline has mainly etruscan origins: etruscans divided the sky into 16 regions. We remain in line with the roman tradition dividing the sky into 4 regions.

Please note again that the fulgores observation is a mystical moment: the observer sets the orientation watching southwards (South is "the origin of everything"). Two areas at the East are named "sinistrae" (favourable) while those at the West are named "dextrae" (unfavorable).

The value of a lightning is given by the area of the sky it comes from and that one where it ends.

According to the roman tradition (very different from the etruscan one) only Jupiter and Summanus (Nocturne Jupiter) can throw lightning even if often on the base of indications and suggestions of other Deities.

Fulgores can be divided into three main categories (manubiae):

first manubiae (favourable): they start on the left and end on the left - they are used to "suadere" or "dissuadere" those have made a promise, a commitment, a plan
second manubiae: they start on the leftside and end on the rightside (or viceversa) - partially negative and harmful. They may indicate benefits with damages.
third manubiae: they start on the rightside and end on the same side - totally negative . This kind of lightning is a sign of devastation, deep changes in the normal status, nothing will remain as it was.

Other traditional classifications:
fulgor quod terebrat, quod discuit, quod urit
fulgores minimae, maiores, ampliores
ostentatorium, perenptorium, presagium
fulmen quod terreat, adlet, puniat

While observing fulgores it's important to note also.
place (public/private, sacred/profane), time, receiver, circumstances, lightning's nature and strength

Some fulgores bring signs directed to humans, other do not announce anything, others may have a meaning but not intelligible to mankind (fatidica, bruta, vana).

The place, thing, entity hit by a fulgor must be purified to appease the Nature's Force. The site's purification must be achieved cancelling all the traces of the event: they have to be buried in loco. In the past also a sacrifice of a black sheep was held. The site is identified as "religiosus" and it mustn't be trampled on. The site is marked by an augur or a pontifex with a lituus and named "puteal" or "bidental" (the distinction of these two terms has been lost).

The lightning is a complex symbol and a deep understanding of its symbology is at the base of the mystical fulgores observation. Lightning is the symbol of the Sky's and Nature's force. Its symbols are the scepter and the lituus. Other symbols are the arrow, the hammer, the sword and all the weapons having two heads or blades.

It is also symbol of divine paternity: it symbolizes production and destruction, condensation and dissipation. It's the symbol of the Nature's occult and secret Force.

In the lightning the invisible force of Nature becomes visible and ineluctable: the force of the common man bends when dealing with it.

Jupiter and the supreme power (in a mystical sense) hold the scepter-fulgor (the broken scepter) as symbol of "force's control" and achievement of an interior peace and stability against chaos. Peace is intended as Perfect Activity and Pure Activity. Control and Calmness opposed to Agitation: it's a transcending force ready to be in action.

Fulgores

I fulmini rivestono un ruolo non secondario all'interno della Religione Tradizionale Romana sia come fenomeno fisico-naturale che come elemento simbolico.

Da un punto di vista fisico-naturale l'osservazione dei fulmini ha un'importanza peculiare perchè essi sono un'espressione molto potente della Forza della Natura. L'osservazione dei fulmini, come già detto per gli altri signa, non ha lo scopo di predire il futuro od altre forme di magia volgare, quanto quella di mantenerci in uno stato di costante coscienza e consapevolezza circa il ruolo e posizione dell'uomo nel mondo. Questa osservazione contribuisce pertanto a mantenerci "svegli" e consapevoli della Forza della Natura.

La disciplina dell'osservazione delle folgori è principalmente di origine etrusca che divideva il cielo in 16 regioni. Per quanto ci riguarda, ci atteniamo alla tradizione romana che prevede la divisione del cielo in 4 regioni.

Ricordo ancora che l'osservazione dei fulmini è un momento "mistico": l'osservatore stabilisce l'orientamento avendo davanti a sè il Sud ("origine di tutte le cose"). Le due aree ad Est sono dette "sinistrae" (propizie, favorevoli), quelle a Ovest sono dette "dextrae" (sfavorevoli).

Il valore del fulmine è dato dalla porzione di cielo da cui proviene e quella in cui ha fine.

Secondo la tradizione romana (diversa da quella etrusca) solo Giove e Summano (Giove Notturno) possono lanciare fulmini, anche se spesso secondo il suggerimento ed il consiglio di altre divinità.

I fulmini possono essere di tre tipi principali (manubiae):

prime manubiae (benefiche): partono da sinistra e finiscono a sinistra - servono per "suadere" o "dissuadere" coloro che hanno formulato un progetto, una promessa, un impegno
seconde manubiae: partono a sinistra e finiscono a destra (o viceversa) parzialmente nocive e negative ed indicano beneficio seguito da danno (o viceversa)
terze manubiae: partono a destra e finiscono a destra - totalmente negative, fulmine che porta devastazione, mutazione dello stato delle cose, non lascia sussistere nulla di ciò che era.

Altre classificazioni:
fulgor quod terebrat, quod discuit, quod urit
fulgores minimae, maiores, ampliores
ostentatorium, perenptorium, presagium
fulmen quod terreat, adlet, puniat

Nell'osservazione dei fulmini è importante inoltre analizzare:
luogo (pubblico/privato, sacro/profano), tempo, destinatario, circostanze, natura e forza del fulmine.

Vi sono poi fulmini il cui segno riguarda gli uomini, quelli che non annunciano nulla e quelli che forse hanno un senso ma non sono comprensibili all'uomo (fatidica, bruta, vana).

Il luogo, la cosa, l'essere folgorato devono essere purificati per placare la forza della Natura. La purificazione del luogo avviene eliminando tutte le tracce dell'evento seppellendole sul posto. Anticamente venivano anche sacrificate delle pecore nere. Il sito viene denominato "religiosus" e non deve essere calpestato: il luogo viene circoscritto da un augur o da un pontifex con il lituo e chiamato "puteal" o "bidental" (la distinzione è andata perduta).

Il fulmine è un simbolo complesso e la comprensione profonda della sua simbologia sono alla base dell'osservazione mistica dei fulmini. Esso è simbolo di forza del cielo e della Natura: è simbolizzato dallo scettro e dal lituo. Altri simboli sono la freccia, il martello e tutte le armi a due punte o due lame.

E' inoltre simbolo di paternità divina, simboleggia il potere di produzione e di distruzione, la condensazione e la dissipazione. E' simbolo di forza occulta della Natura.

Nel fulmine la forza invisibile della Natura diventa visibile ed ineluttabile: la forza dell'uomo comune si piega di fronte ad essa.

Giove ed il potere sovrano (in senso mistico e non politico) detengono lo scettro-fulmine (lo scettro spezzato) come simbolo del "controllo della forza": raggiungimento di una pace interiore e di stabilità in mezzo al caos. Pace come perfezione di attività e attività pura. Controllo e calma in opposizione all'agitazione: forza trascendente pronta a scattare.

Atheism

The problem of Atheism detains peculiar aspects within Traditional Religion: it's a very complex issue hardly simplified into elementary concepts.

Atheism, in general terms, is based on a negation of a transcendent dimension in Nature and in reality. According to a traditional perspective, atheist is not who denies and refuses the existence of Gods/Goddesses, but rather who has been abandoned by Gods/Goddesses. The analytical perspective is thus reversed.

A man abandoned by Gods/Goddesses (even for his choice and decision), is a man abandoned to his fate: he is thus a-theist, deprived of the Gods'/Goddesses' presence and support.

Traditional Religion identifies a distinction between religious and not-religious man rather than believer and atheist.

If Nature and reality are "cases" or "containers", which can be read and interpreted by scientific laws, Gods/Goddesses are the meta-physical content of Nature and reality which finally become expressions of the Divine's manifestation. Describing and interpreting such content is not a science goal: it's impossible to describe into mathematical formula the joy and role of family links (Vesta), the role of Law and Authority (Jupiter/Juno) or the revealed beauty of a Sunset (Venus): these links and meanings have to be interpreted through a different meta-scientific perspective.

Gods/Goddesses may be ignored or disdained: but this approach makes a man/woman a not-religious man/woman. The transcendent dimension is not denied because the idea of humanity, Nature and reality will be otherwise unavoidably reduced and degraded. This degradation results from a negation of those fundamental aspects of human spirit directly connected to this transcendent dimension. This dimension makes mankind and Nature not only a mere quantitative phenomenon, but a qualitative one. If we consider only these quantitative aspects anything is "crippled": both dimensions have thus to be integrated.

Mankind is presently living in this crippled condition whose effects are definitively evident.

Regaining "quality" to mankind and Nature thus firstly means overcoming "Theism" or the God's personification and humanization, the idea of Providence, sanctions, Hell and Heaven, the idea of Divine linked to a sterile idea of Good and Evil. Overcoming theism implies consequently overcoming Atheism because the concept of "Believing" disappears. Disappearing the idea of "believing", also the idea of "believer" will disappear and consequently also the idea of "not-believer". If the term "believer" is a non-sense, similarly also the term "atheist", in conventional terms, will be a non-sense.

Ateismo

La questione dell'Ateismo presenta dei caratteri peculiari nella Religione Tradizionale. L'ateismo convenzionale di fatto implica una negazione del "trascendente" nella realtà e nella Natura.

L'ateismo nella prospettiva tradizionale si presenta come una questione complessa difficilmente riducibile in concetti elementari. Ad un livello molto superficiale si può dire che l'ateo non è colui che nega l'esitenza degli Dei/Dee, ma colui che è "abbandonato dagli Dei/Dee". La prospettiva è quindi rovesciata con implicazioni molto complesse.

L'uomo abbandonato dagli Dei/Dee (anche per sua scelta) è un uomo abbandonato a sè stesso: quindi "ateo", privato della presenza degli Dei/Dee.

La Religione Tradizionale semmai pone la distinzione fra uomo religioso e uomo non religioso.

Se il mondo e la realtà sono "contenitori", interpretati da leggi formulate dalla scienza, gli Dei/Dee sono il "contenuto meta-fisico" di ogni ambito del reale e della Natura, che alla fine si presenta come forme di manifestazione delle divinità. Non è compito della scienza delineare formule o leggi per interpretare questo contenuto; l'interpretazione di questi nessi e manifestazioni è compito di una dimensione meta-scientifica.

Gli Dei/Dee possono essere ignorati o disprezzati: questo rende l'uomo non religioso. Questo però non implica una negazione della realtà sovrasensibile perchè altrimenti si avrebbe una menomazione e una degradazione della concezione che l'uomo ha di sè stesso, della Natura e della realtà.Questa degradazione si realizza perchè gli aspetti fondamentali dello spirito umano si legano proprio a questa dimensione sovra-umana che rende l'uomo e la realtà non più solamente un mero fenomeno quantitativo, ma qualitativo. Fermarsi solo agli aspetti quantitativi vuol dire "degradazione": le due prospettive (quantitativa e qualitativa) devono essere quindi integrate.

L'uomo oggi vive "amputato" di una dimensione e gli effetti di questa menomazione sono evidenti.Restituire "qualità" all'uomo e alla realtà vuol dire in primo luogo superare il "teismo" ovvero la personificazione ed umanizzazione del Divino, l'idea di Provvidenza, l'idea delle sanzioni , del Paradiso e dell'Inferno, il Divino legato ad una mera idea di Bene e di Male. Superare il Dio-Persona del "teismo" implica, conseguentemente un superamento dell'ateismo: svanisce il concetto di "credere" e di "credente" e parallelamente di "non-credente". Se quindi il termine "credente" perde il suo senso, allo stesso modo perde di senso il concetto di "ateo", nel senso convenzionale del termine.

The highest level of the Divine expression is articulated through a Triad or three key-manifestations of the Divine. The Triad describes the expression of the three main Divine Functions. The Traditional Roman Religion is based on a First Triad (or Archaic Triad) and a Second Triad. The First Triad is composed of Jupiter-Mars-Quirinus: the Second Triad is composed of Jupiter-Juno-Minerva.

The First Triad

The First Triad is mentioned in many religious formula and rituals (devotio, ritual of the Salii, consacration of spolia opima, etc…), and historically it was embedded and personified by the main flamines: the Flamen Dialis, the Flamen Martialis, the Flamen Quirinalis.

La Triade

Il vertice dell’espressione divina nella Religione Tradizionale Romana si declina attraverso una Triade ovvero tre manifestazioni chiave ed epicali del divino. La Triade descrive la manifestazione delle tre funzioni principali del divino.

La Religione Tradizionale Romana presenta una Prima Triade (o Triade Arcaica) e una Seconda Triade. La Prima Triade è composta da Giove-Marte-Quirino, mentre la Seconda è composta da Giove-Giunone-Minerva.

La Prima Triade

La Prima Triade è menzionata in numerose formule e rituali (devotio, rituale dei Salii, consacrazione degli spolia opima, ecc…) e storicamente era impersonificata dai tre flamines maggiori: il Flamen Dialis, il Flamen Martialis, il Flamen Quirinalis.

Reflections

In occasion of the beginning of the sacred year according to the ancient calendar of King Numa, I include some personal reflections and considerations.

We are today living in a phase of social, political, ethical, economic and environmental chaos resulting by a culture which, after having cancelled any immaterial contents from the world, has deprived the human kind of any sense of responsibility (in spatial and temporal terms). The Divine has been expelled by the Nature and by our planet Earth: “man” has become the sole criterion and measure for all. It is necessary to re-acknowledge that “All is interconnected” and at present it has become particularly urgent to re-create and re-generate again an harmony with Nature, her forces, her energies.

A re-appropriation of Gods and Goddesses has thus become an urgent priority because they are essentially the “Spirit of the Earth and Nature”; they are the essential element capable to provide dignity to the reality around us. Therefore they must become visible again to those wishing to live their lives in conscience, awareness and responsibility.

To do this the great heritage of the Traditional Roman Religion can represent a huge ethical and spiritual resource also acting as a “compass” in re-directing men and women towards a reconstruction of the harmony (Pax Deorum) we have lost. This traditional heritage, to which it must be assigned its original dignity and value removing those prejudices generated by ignorance and antagonism, is thus a “map” useful to undertake and remain in the “Via” in order to consider and understand the World as a network of signs, signals and values, as a spiritual communication network. Therefore, the Traditional Roman Religion represents a path “to go back home”, it’s a “Via” for a return journey based on responsibility towards oneself, others and Nature.

It is important to be aware that the past cannot come back in the same way in which it once has been materialized, but its ideas and values can be distilled: what disappeared as civilization can live again as “principle”.

The Traditional Roman Religion is essentially based on the ethics of the natural "end" and "limit". The measure of this "end" is Death. Everything is living is destined to die, but, even if destined to die, it doesn't mean that life is not worth living. Everything has its own "time". It is important not to miss the joy life offers to us: "carpe diem". We thus must "conquest our time" to valorise life as it is. We must live our life as well as our death with dignity. We can live our life being always aware of our limits.

The Traditional Roman Religion is essentially based on the principle of tolerance and refuse any idea of “religions’ wars and clashes” in any expression and manifestation. This tolerance is expression of a religious cosmopolitanism in which believers, not- believers and believers from other religions are recognized in their diversity and multiplicity (principle of universal tolerance): they are not a threat to any type of monopoly of an absolute truth, but they are all a source of enrichment.

In occasione dell'inizio dell'anno sacro secondo il calendario antico di Re Numa, approfitto per riportare alcune mie considerazioni personali.

Oggi ci troviamo a constatare che l’umanità sta vivendo una fase di caos sociale, economico, politico ed ambientale causato da una cultura che, dopo aver svuotato il mondo di ogni contenuto, ha privato l’uomo di qualsiasi senso di responsabilità (spaziale e temporale). Il Divino è stato espulso dalla Natura e dal nostro pianeta e l’uomo è stato assunto a criterio unico di misura di tutte le cose. Siamo consapevoli che Tutto è connesso ed oggi è più che mai necessario tornare ad essere ri-sintonizzati con la Natura, le sue forze e le sue energie. Abbiamo bisogno quindi di riappropriarci degli Dei e delle Dee che sono lo spirito della Terra (il nostro Pianeta) e sono ciò che danno dignità alla realtà che ci circonda: abbiamo bisogno che tornino ad essere visibili agli uomini che desiderano vivere in coscienza e consapevolezza.

Per fare questo si fa riferimento al grande retaggio della Tradizione Romana: essa rappresenta un grande bacino etico e spirituale che può fungere da bussola per ri-orientarci a ricostruire questa sintonia (Pax Deorum) che è andata perduta. Questo retaggio tradizionale, cui viene restituita la sua originaria dignità e valore ripulendolo dai pregiudizi sedimentati dall’ignoranza e dall’antagonismo, è quindi una mappa per non perdere la “Via”, per tornare a vedere e comprendere il Mondo come un insieme di segnali e di valori, una rete di comunicazione. La Religione Tradizionale Romana rappresenta un ritorno a casa, è una Via per un viaggio di ritorno fondato sulla responsabilità verso sé stessi, verso gli altri e verso la Terra.

E’ importante essere consapevoli che il passato non può ritornare nello stesso modo in cui si è manifestato una volta, ma esso può essere ripreso sottoforma di idee e valori: ciò che si è dissolto come civiltà può tornare a vivere come “principio” e “criterio”.

La Religione Tradizionale Romana si fonda essenzialmente sull’etica del limite e del finito naturale. La misura di questo limite è la “morte”. Tutto ciò che vive è destinato a perire, ma, anche se destinato a morire, ciò non significa che non sia degno di vivere. Ogni cosa possiede il suo tempo. E’ indispensabile non perdere quella gioia che la vita ci offre: “carpe diem”. Siamo tenuti quindi a conquistare il nostro tempo per valorizzare la vita per quello che essa essenzialmente è. Bisogna vivere la vita, così come la morte, con dignità essendo sempre consapevoli dei propri limiti.

La Religione Tradizionale Romana si fonda principalmente sull’idea di tolleranza e rifiuta ogni idea di “guerra o scontro di religione” in qualsiasi forma, espressione e manifestazione. Questa tolleranza è la materializzazione del principio di “cosmopolitismo religioso” in base al quale credenti, non credenti o credenti di altre religioni sono riconosciuti nella loro diversità e molteplicità (principio di tolleranza universale): nessuno viene considerato una minaccia al monopolio di una verità assoluta, ma costituiscono tutti una fonte di arricchimento.

After having celebrated the Februalia as final rite of purification during the last day of February, on March the 1st the Sacred Year begins.

March is thus a very important month characterized by many celebrations.

March is enterely dedicated to Life and Nature re-birth in all their expressions. This month is dedicated to the generating forces converging into two polatiries: Mars (Male Polarity) and Cybele (Female Polarity)

Mars - usually wrongly labelled as the God of War - is the "He-generating". He is symbolically Romolus' and Remus' father being in this way Father of the Roman People. Mars is the Fecundating Male Energy: Earth, Plants, Flowers, Fields, etc. He is defined as Marmor (shining, gleaming) but more frequently as Marmar (Reproductive Force of the Nature) or Gradivus (Fecundating Vegetation).

Sacred plants to Mars are: figtree and oak. Sacred animals are: wolf, horse and woodpecker.

If Janus is the sacralization of the "beginnings", Mars is the sacralization of the "activity" and "things' blossoming". To Mars are dedicated the "Sacrae Prima-verae" of youth who entered the adult life as foundators and fecundators.
His sacred symbol is a Spear.

Cybele is the female polarity of fecundity (She-Fecundating). Cybele is by definition the Great Mather embracing all the Goddesses having specific characteristics. In the same time she is associated to the main Goddesses: Iuno, Vesta, Tellus, Bona Dea, Maia, Gaia, Flora, Ceres, Pomona, etc.

Cybele is the perennial energy of the Nature renewal. She is the Lady of the Plants: pine, boxtree and oak are sacred plants to Cybele. She is also the Lady of the Animals. Humans have learnt from her how to cultivate corn and cereals.

Cybele's sacred symbols are: the Tower and the Lion.

Dopo aver celebrato i Februalia come rito di purificazione durante l'ultimo giorno di Febbraio, con il 1 Marzo inizia l'Anno Sacro.

Marzo è quindi un mese importantissimo e ricco di celebrazioni.

Marzo è interamente dedicato alla rinasciata della vita e della Natura in tutte le sue espressioni. Il mese è dedicato alle forze generatrici che convergono nella polarità maschile di Marte ed in quella femminile di Cibele.

Marte - spesso erroneamente identificato come il Dio della guerra - è il "generatore". E' simbolicamente padre di Romolo e Remo quindi padre del Popolo Romano. Marte è l'energia maschile che feconda: la Terra, le Piante, i Fiori, i campi agricoli, ecc...
Viene definito Marmor (splendente, luccicante), ma più spesso Marmar (forza riproduttiva della Natura) o Gradivus (Fecondatore della Vegetazione).

Le piante sacre di Marte sono il Fico e la Quercia. I suoi animali sacri sono il lupo, il cavallo e il picchio.

Se Giano è la sacralizzazione degli inizi, Marte è la sacralizzazione dell'attività e dello sbocciare delle cose. A lui sono dedicate le "primavere sacre" dei giovani che entravano nella vita adulta e diventavano fecondatori e fondatori.

Il suo simbolo è la Lancia.

Cibele è la polarità femminile della fecondità. Cibele è la Grande Madre per definizione ed unisce in sè stessa tutte le divinità femminili aventi dei compiti specifici. Essa è inoltre associata alle maggiori divinità femminili: Giunone, Vesta, Tellus, Bona Dea, Maia, Gaia, Cerere, ecc...

Cibele è l'energia perenne del rinnovamento della Natura. Cibele è la Signora delle Piante: a lei sono sacri il Pino, il Bosso e la Quercia. Essa è anche Signora degli Animali. Da lei gli uomini hanno appreso la coltivazione del grano e dei cereali.
I suoi simboli sono la Torre ed il Leone.

The 5 vows in the Traditional Roman Religion

First of all, it is important to remind that the Ancient Believers in the Traditional Roman Religion do not "pray" in the conventional meaning of this term: nobody is "servant" of a God or Goddess.
Gods/Goddesses must be "cultivated" (Colere Deos) in order to achieve a Pax Deorum, an armony with these forces around us.

Cultivating Gods/Goddesses is an activity requiring constant personal commitment and a quiet force: the main tool to nourish this quiet force is the practicing of the Virtus which is the fundamental principle to undertake the Via and follow its journey.

How can one achieve this? Following these 5 vows (votum = commitment, pledge) is an important step to be constantly oriented to the Virtus and undertake the Roman Via:

Frugality: live in semplicity and sobriety, avoiding excesses and ostentation, being satisfied with what is really necessary
Superiority: never feel inferior or second to nobody in the practicing of the Via
Humanity: act for the others' and the community's well being
Usefulness: act in order to make your actions useful to others and to the community
Pietas: what is positive and negative in a family is evidenced by the descendants' behaviour. We have the duty to highlight what is good in our famliy: only following the mos maiorum and cultivating Gods/Goddesses we can achieve such a result and build our Pax Deorum.

These principles are very similar and common in the traditional japan religion: nonetheless they well summarize the fundamental principia of the traditional latin ethics.

Following these 5 vows one can undertake the Via towards the costruction of the Virtus and the achievement of he Pax Deorum: in this way the Ancient Believer doesn't need to pray bacause Gods/Goddesses will always support him.

In primo luogo è importante ricordare che gli Antichi Credenti nella Religione Tradizionale Romana non "pregano", nel senso convenzionale del termine; nessuno è "servo" di un Dio o di una Dea. Gli Dei e le Dee si "coltivano" (Colere Deos) allo scopo di addivenire alla realizzazione della Pax Deorum ovvero un'armonia con queste forze che ci circondano.

Coltivare gli Dei/Dee è un opera che richiede un impegno personale costante ed una forza tranquilla: lo strumento principale per alimentare questa forza tranquilla è la pratica della Virtus che è il principio fondamentale per intraprendere la Via e mantenersi sul suo percorso.

Come è possibile praticare la Virtus ed intraprendere il cammino della Via Romana?

Per fare questo è essenziale seguire e rispettare 5 voti (votum= promessa, impegno) ovvero:

Frugalità: vivere nella semplicità e nella sobrietà, allontanando gli eccessi e accontentandosi di ciò che è realmente necessario
Superiorità: mai sentirsi inferiore a nessuno nella pratica della Via
Umanità: operare per il bene degli altri e della comunità
Utilità: fare in modo che il proprio operato sia utile agli altri ed alla comunità
Pietà: ciò che vi è di buono e di cattivo in una famiglia è evidenziato dal comportamento dei discendenti. Abbiamo il dovere di mettere in luce ciò che vi è di buono nella nostra famiglia: solo seguendo il mos maiorum e coltivando gli Dei/Dee possiamo ottenere questo risultato e raggiungere la Pax Deorum.

Questi principi sono comuni anche alla tradizione religiosa giapponese, ma ben sintetizzano il principia fondamentali dell'etica tradizionale latina.

Seguendo questi 5 Voti si intraprende la Via nella speranza di costruire la propria Virtus: in questo modo l'Antico Credente non ha bisogno di pregare perchè gli Dei/Dee lo seguiranno.

Rites and Rituals in Modern Traditional Roman Religion

Rites and rituals pose severe problems in those religions inspired to an antique tradition: above all problems of "meaning" and "sense" because in this case the problem is how define and understand the meaning of functions based on values typical of another "time". First of all, this difficulty derives from the fact that "we live our time" which is not only chronologically but also conceptually very far from the time when these rites were imagined, designed, lived and practiced in everyday life.

There is thus a problematic fact in practical terms: today it is very difficult for us to concretely make a relatively simple rite like the "sacrifice" in its original form not only in practical terms but also in sacral ones because we can hardly imagine the inner meaning of this rite. If it is very difficult for us the sacrifice, it is impossible to think about more complex rites like the October Equus.

When speaking about a problem of "sense", I mean that the problem is not how make a mechanical repetition of some acts and gestures as well as the repetition of some formulas from the Tradition: there are many examples of these rites which are mere "commemorations". These commemorations lack a symbolic "content" and the link to a precise systems of values and a perception of the world: this lack makes these rites meaningless flabby parodies. It 's like having the alphabet of an ancient language without having the related syntax: we can put together some letters but we don't know what we have written.

Our times are extremely far from that system of values and visions: maybe we have never been so far like in present times. We live in a Christian culture and, above all, we live in the modern technological society.

Antique rites were linked to a precise and complex symbolic code, but many antique symbols have been reversed, forgotten or ignored. These antique symbols were linked to the role and position mankind occupies within the natural order. Today all this has changed also because mankind lives completely disconnected from the natural cycles and dynamics. This is the reason why for example the sacrifice is presently inconceivable because it had the aim, among others, to make natural the act of eating animals being a form of violence which "makes the living disappear". Sacrifice becomes a remedy to justify how what is disappearing is necessary to make something else survive (macte: grow!). Sacrifice is the act through which an unavoidable violence necessary to survive is driven to an aware consciousness. Without this consciousness, eating is just a mechanical act completely disconnected to Nature. These considerations can be extented to all the aspects of human existence: but in the techological era all acts are, and can be only, mechanical acts. After all, we live in the Khali Yuga time.

For the homo technologicus antique rites are uncoinceivable, ridicolous, grotesque. Antique symbols are meaninless, no-use, naive in the technological society. Also monoteistic religions, notwithstanding their great apparatus, are likely to be empty boxes.

What can we do?

We can try to reconstruct a religious link with Nature, her manifestations, her beats, her rhythms, rediscovering the divine soul of Nature. The problem is not to fight technology and its gadgets pursuing a "natural heaven" in an eternal nostalgia: we are men and women living our times. We have to reconstruct an aware consciousness with the support of this great ancient heritage which represents an immense base of great wisdom. It is clear enough that the Antique Roman Religion, as it was in the past, is dead, but what once has dead maybe was not worth dying.

On these bases it is possible "to build": maybe we can build only poor shacks over splendid ruins. But it is better to live in these shacks than remaining in the ruins passively suffering a decaying world.

I think that when any act in our everyday life is a rite, maybe we are moving towards the "Via": this is a little contribution to be and remain awake. Family, friends, meals, civil duties, rensponsibilites towards the others, the respect for Nature, anything can become again a sacred act. In this way we can see again the "content" of the world around us in all its facets: and the "divine" is always hidden there.

Riti e Rituali nella Religione Tradizionale Romana moderna

I riti ed i rituali pongono molti problemi nelle religioni che si ispirano ad una tradizione antica: soprattutto problemi di "senso" poichè in questo caso si tratta proprio di definire ed afferrare il significato di funzioni che si rifanno a valori di un altro Tempo. Questa problematicità deriva in prima istanza dal fatto che noi viviamo il nostro tempo che è non solo cronologicamente, ma anche concettualmente molto distante da quello in cui questi riti furono pensati, vissuti e praticati nella quotidianità.

Vi è certamente una prima problematicità di tipo pratico: per noi oggi è difficilmente immaginabile praticare materialmente un rito relativamente semplice come il "sacrificio" nella sua forma originaria non solo in termini pratici, ma anche sacrali perchè con molta fatica possiamo concepire il senso profondo di questo rito. Se è difficilissimo il sacrificio, è impossibile pensare a riti molto più complessi come l'October Equus.

Quando parlo di problema di senso intendo dire che la questione non è nella ripetizione meccanica di certi gesti o nella ripetizione di formule che la Tradizione ci ha tramandato: tantissimi sono i riti che vengono rievocati in questo modo. Quello che però manca, e che rende queste rievocazioni quasi delle parodie fiacche e svuotate di significato, è appunto il "contenuto" simbolico e l'aggancio ad un ben determinato sistema di valori ed ad una visione del mondo. E' come disporre di un alfabeto di una lingua antica di cui non si possiede la sintassi: mettiamo insieme delle lettere senza sapere il senso di quello che abbiamo scritto.

La nostra epoca è lontanissima da quel sistema di valori e da quella visione del mondo: anzi forse non siamo mai stati così lontani come in questa epoca. Di mezzo c'è il cristianesimo ma sopratuttto la cultura tecnologica della società contemporanea.

I riti antichi si legano ad un codice simbolico preciso e complesso, ma molti di questi simboli sono stati rovesciati o dimenticati. Si trattava di simboli fortemente connessi al ruolo ed alla posizione che l'uomo detiene nell'ordine naturale. Oggi tutto questo non c'è più anche perchè gli uomini vivono completamente slegati dai cicli e dalle logiche della Natura. L'inconcepibilità del sacrificio dipende anche dal fatto che, tra le altre cose, esso aveva lo scopo di rendere naturale il gesto di mangiare gli animali che è una forma di violenza che fa "sparire il vivente". Il sacrificio diventa un rimedio per giustificare come ciò che scompare serva a far sussistere qualcos'altro (macte: accresciti). Il sacrificio è l'atto con cui la violenza inevitabile per la sopravvivenza viene condotta alla coscienza. Senza questa coscienza, il mangiare è un atto meccanico. Ma oggi mangiare è proprio solamente un atto meccanico completamente svincolato dalla realtà della Natura. E quello che vale per il sacrificio-mangiare può essere esteso a tutti gli aspetti dell'esistenza umana: nell'era tecnologica tutti gli atti sono, e non possono essere altro che, meccanici. Non dimentichiamoci che siamo nel periodo di Khali Yuga.

Per l'homo technologicus i riti antichi sono "incomprensibili" e appaiono grotteschi e risibili. I simboli antichi sono diventati inutili, indecifrabili, superflui nella società tecnologica. Le stesse religioni monoteistiche, dotate di grandi apparati, appaiono come delle scatole vuote.

Cosa possiamo fare?

Quello che si può fare è ricostruire un legame "religioso" con la Natura, le sue manifestazioni, i suoi battiti, i suoi ritmi, ritrovandovi il "divino". Non si tratta di combattere la tecnologia e tornare ad uno stadio "naturale" di perenne nostalgia: siamo uomini e donne del nostro tempo. Si tratta di ricostruire una coscienza consapevole con il supporto di un grande retaggio antico che rappresenta un patrimonio di immensa saggezza. E' evidente che la Religione Romana Antica è morta per sempre, ma non è detto che ciò che è morto meritasse di morire.

Su queste fondamenta è possibile "costruire": saranno magari delle misere capanne sopra rovine magnifiche. Ma è sempre meglio che marcire nelle rovine e subire passivamente un mondo in rovina.

Penso che fare in modo che ogni gesto della nostra quotidianità torni ad essere un rito può essere un piccolo contributo a rimanere sulla "Via", a "svegliarsi" e a rimanere svegli. Il convivio, la famiglia, l'amicizia, i doveri civici, la responsabilità verso gli altri, il rispetto della Natura che ci sostiene, tutto può tornare ad essere sacro. February (Februa) is dedicated to purification. During this month, festivities are focused on the memory of defuncts, magical animals, peaceful activities and sleep. The tool used for purification is named februum.

It is important to remind that the traditional year will begin on March: thus purification during February is necessary to prepare the beginning of the new year.

This month is dedicated to Februus and Februa (male and feminine numen of "The Purifying") who, being positive energies, are opposed to Febris (The Fever), negative energy.

The festivities during February are thus linked to purification activities (for the body, spirit, sites, objects, etc.)

February the 1st - Amburbium: festivity for the purification of villages and cities and their public sites through a circular procession holding a februum (a purification tool). The same ceremony can be applied for home purification.

Il mese di Febbraio (Februa) è dedicato alla purificazione. Durante questo mese vengono ricordati i defunti, gli animali magici, le attività pacifiche ed il sonno. Tutti gli strumenti di purificazione si chiamano februum.

Bisogna ricordare che l'anno tradizionale inizia con il mese di marzo: quindi la purificazione del mese di febbraio è necessaria come preparazione per l'avvio dell'anno vero e proprio.

Il mese è dedicato a Februus e Februa (il Purificatore/la Purificatrice) che, in quanto energie positive, si oppongono a Febris (la Febbre) energia negativa.

Tutte le festività del mese sono quindi legate ad attività di purificazione (del corpo, dello spirito, dei luoghi, degli oggetti, ecc...)

The signs' observation and understanding is a particularly difficult moment requiring a clear, precise and specific awareness. It is easy to fall into superstition. In brief, signs' perception implies deep meditation and reflection, awaking this awareness about signs and signals coming from Nature.

Of course, everyone is free to feel these signs and how feel these signs: Tradition can however provide us with some useful indications. Some birds (aves augurales) can provide valid signs.

Tradition distinguishes these birds into alites (providing signs with their flight) and oscines (providing signs with their call): among these Tradition evidences the crow, the rook, the owl and the magpie.

Birds can provide favorable as well as unfavorable according to:

for the alites: sky region, flight's height and type, behaviour, place where they perch;
for the oscines: tone, call direction

Impetrativa sings may imply relatively few problems because they are fundamentally requested signs. More problems are linked to signa oblativa which are self-manifested, with no direct and voluntary request.

Tradition classifies these signs into:

signa ex caelo (thunder and flash)
signa ex avibus (signs from birds)
signa ex tripudiis (signs from the sacred chickens)
signa ex quadrupedibus (signs from dogs, horses, wolves and foxes)

Tradition identifies also the signa ex diris, threatening signs.

Dissonance and lack of harmony with the Divine can be manifested through negative signs classified as follows:

prodigium, ostentum e portentum (negative phenomena of inanimate nature)
monstrum e miraculum (negative phenomena of animate nature)

L'osservazione e comprensione dei segni è un momento complesso che richiede una coscienza consapevole precisa e determinata. E' facile cadere nella superstizione. In sostanza, la precezione dei segni si lega alla meditazione profonda ed al risveglio di questa coscienza su questi segnali che provengono dalla Natura.

Ovviamente ciascuno di noi è libero di "sentire" questi segni: la tradizione antica ci fornisce qualche utile indicazione. Alcuni uccelli (aves augurales) possono dare dei segni validi.

La tradizione distingue questi uccelli in alites (che danno segni con il volo) e gli oscines (che danno segni con il grido): di questi ultimi in particolare si evidenziano il corvo, la cornacchia, la civetta e la gazza.

Gli uccelli possono dare segni favorevoli o sfavorevoli secondo:

per gli alites: regione del cielo, altezza e tipo di volo, comportamento, punto in cui si vanno ad appollaiare
per gli oscines: tono, direzione della voce

I segni impetrativa pongono relativamente pochi problemi perchè sono segni che si richiedono. Maggiori problemi sono posti dai signa oblativa che si presentano da soli senza essere richiesti.

La Tradizione in questo caso distingue:

signa ex caelo (tuono e fulmine)
signa ex avibus (segni dagli uccelli)
signa ex tripudiis (segni dai polli sacri)
signa ex quadrupedibus (segni da cani, cavalli, lupi e volpi)

Vi sono poi i signa ex diris ovvero i segni minacciosi.

La dissonanza o la disarmonia con il divino si manifesta con segni negativi classificati dalla Tradizione come segue:

prodigium, ostentum e portentum (per fenomeni negativi di natura inanimata)
monstrum e miraculum (per fenomeni negativi di natura animata)

Nature is not an immense mechanism: Nature is not made only of chemical-physical reactions and phenomena. These observations can describe Nature as a "container": they are unable to describe what Nature essentially contains. This untangible "content" may show different names, expressions, manifestations: in the Traditional Roman Religion this "content" is expressed by Gods/Goddesses or, better, some of them, in particular those described by Natural Theology.

Gods/Goddesses send some "signs" or "signals" which of course are not their sole expression tools.

In the past the Augures (a "board" completely indpendent from the Pontifices) were called to manage the ius augurale which was secret: it has completely got lost. They had doctrines, rites, cerimonies directed to the consultation and interpretation of divine signs. This means that signs' interpretation (both as augurium and auspicium - a distinction very difficult to made) cannot be used to foresee.

Usually the augur address his prayer (the term "prayer" is not completely correct and appropriate) to Jupiter/Juno (as "Signs' Sovereigns") asking if it is fas (or "if the mystic foundation exists for...) a given site, a given action, a given decision, etc...

The wording is as follows: "Iuppiter/Juno si fas est ... send me this sign"

The procedure (according to T. Livius) is based on the activation of a communication with a God/Goddess through a lituus (a curved wooden stick with no knobs)

It is important to note and evidence that all this can have a value, a sense and a meaning only if one can achieve a complete and deep change in the way he/her perceive and see the world and the universe around us. It is essential to build, day after day, a serene and clear awareness about what we cannot otherwise "see". Without this awareness, this sort of quiet energy, all this, as in the case of rites in any other religion, are only folkcloristic expressions, a game, a nonsense fiction, a simulation, a parody deprived of any meaning and sense.

How to get the augurium

The site where to observe sings (auspicia impetrativa) must be a sacred place limited by the lituus or a templum. It must be quadrangular, oriented (except for Vesta who requires circular sites), with or without visible borders: it must have only one entrance. The site must be freed by impure or hostile forces which can eventually occupy it.

The augur must have his/her face southward oriented (Pars Antica - the origin of anything) and his/her back northward oriented (Pars Postica); head must be veiled and he/she must hold the lituus in the right hand. The augur, invoking the God/Goddess, limit four main areas in the sky (regiones) drawing a line from east to west: in addition to the Pars Antica and the Pars Postica, he/she has the Dextrae Partes (on the right) and the Levae Partes (on the left).

He/she will focus his/her view on a reference point on the front. The augur passes his/her lituus from the right to the left hand asking: "Jupiter/Juno if fas is that ... make evident and precise signs appear between the limits I have assigned and set". After that the augur list the signs he/she wants to see or perceive.

La Natura non è un immenso ingranaggio: non è fatta solo da reazioni e fenomeni chimici-fisici. Queste osservazioni possono descrivere il "contenitore" della Natura, ma non quello che la Natura contiene. Questo contenuto intangibile può avere tante denominazioni, espressioni e manifestazioni: nella Religione Tradizionale Romana questo "contenuto" è espresso dagli Dei e dalle Dee o, per lo meno, da alcuni di essi/esse quelli cioè che vengono descritti dalla Teologia Naturale.

Gli Dei e le Dee mandano dei "segni" o dei "segnali" che ovviamente non sono i loro unici mezzi di espressione.

In passato gli Auguri (un collegio completamente indipendente da quello dei Pontefici) erano chiamati a gestire lo ius augurale che era segreto e che è andato perduto. Essi possedevano dottrine, riti e cerimonie finalizzati alla consultazione ed interpretazione dei segni. Questo significa che l'interpretazione dei segni (nelle forme di augurium e auspicium - una distinzione molto difficile da effettuare) non serviva e non serve tuttora a prevedere.

Solitamente ci si rivolge a Giove/Giunone (nella loro veste di "sovrani dei segni") se sia fas (ovvero "se esiste il fondamento mistico a che...") un determinato luogo, una certa azione, una certa decisione, ecc...

La formula è la seguente: "Iuppiter/Juno si fas est ... inviami un determinato segno"
Il procedimento (sulla base di quanto descritto da Tito Livio) prevede l'attivazione di una comunicazione con un determinato Dio/Dea per mezzo di un lituus (bastone ricurvo privo di nodi).

E' importante sottolineare che tutto questo ha un valore ed un senso solo se si riesce a conseguire un profondo cambiamento nel modo in cui vediamo e percepiamo il mondo e l'universo che ci circondano. Si tratta infatti di costruire, giorno per giorno, una consapevolezza serena e nitida di ciò che non si vede. Se non si possiede questa consapevolezza, questa forza tranquilla, tutto questo, come può del resto avvenire per qualsiasi rito di qualsiasi altro credo, non sarà altro che folclore, un gioco, una finzione svuotati di qualsiasi significato e senso.

Come prendere l'augurium

Il Luogo per osservare i segni (auspicia impetrativa) deve essere un luogo sacro delimitato dal lituus ovvero un templum. Deve essere quadrangolare, orientato (eccetto che per Vesta che richiede luoghi circolari), con o senza contorno visibilmente segnato, e deve essere munito di un solo ingresso. Il luogo deve essere liberato da tutte le forze impure o ostili che possono eventualmente risiedervi.

L'augure deve avere il volto rivolto a Sud (Pars Antica - origine di tutte le cose) e le spalle a Nord (Pars Postica); il capo deve essere velato e deve tenere sulla mano destra il lituus. L'augure, invocando il Dio/Dea delimita quattro zone del cielo (regiones) tracciando una linea da est ad ovest: oltre alla Pars Antica e Pars Postica, a destra avrà le Dextrae Partes e a sinistra le Levae Partes.

Davanti a sè fissa un punto di riferimento. L'augure passa il lituus dalla mano destra a quella sinistra e chiede: "Giove/Giunone se è fas che ... fai apparire dinnanzi a me dei segni evidenti e precisi fra i limiti che ho stabilito" Dopo l'augure elenca gli auspici che vuole vedere giungere.

Ianus essentially sacralizes the "passage" both in spatial and in temporal sense unifying two spaces as well as two times. Also for this reason Ianus is symbolically represented having two opposite faces one oriented to the past and one to the future (also having however a third face not visible for the common man).

Ianus' main symbol is a couple of keys: a golden and a silver key.

Ianus' female polarity are Carna, Iuturna and Diana.

Il mese di Gennaio è interamente dedicato a Giano "Ianus", divinità maschile, che sinboleggia la sacralizzazione degli inizi, delle sorgenti e delle porte (Ianua).

Fondamentalmente Giano sacralizza "il passaggio" sia in senso spaziale che temporale ed unisce due spazi così come due tempi. Anche per questo Giano è rappresentato simbolicamente con due volti uno rivolto al passato ed uno rivolto al futuro pur avendo un terzo volto non visibile per l'uomo comune.

Il simbolo di Giano sono due chiavi: una d'oro ed una d'argento.

Le polarità femminili di Giano sono Carna, Giuturna e Diana.

This day is dedicated to an ancient Goddess, Angerona - Dea Dia, so ancient that also for Romans was rather mysterious. This day and Dea Dia are devoted to the rites of a particularly important moment of the year: the winter solstice

In this peculiar day named dies brevissimus (shortest day), the Ianua Coeli (The Sky Gates) are opened (the Ianus' golden key) and light preavils again over darkness. The biological cycle of life begins again.

The importance of Dea Dia is given also by the fact that the temple of this Goddess, on 19 or 29 May, was the sacred place where the Arvales met to attend to important liturgies (Arvalia) in favour of Lares. Arvales, dressed with white gowns (white expresses magical sovereignty) through ceremonies for Dea Dia, Lares and Mars-father affirmed the ties of the mankind with Mother Earth.

During this day, which marks the beginning of the Arvalic Year, we remember our Lares or The Ancestors and the future descendants; we, the living part of the family, thus are the "present ring" of a long chain being suspended between past and future.

The Lar Familiaris is the "family's soul" whose symbol is the home firelight as in the case of Vesta Mater.

The home ceremony must be made after the sunset being addressed to the imagines of the two Home Lares (representing the two universal polarities: masculine and feminine).

The opening formula is as follows

La giornata del 21 dicembre è dedicata ad una Dea antichissima, Angerona - Dea Dia, talmente antica da essere quasi misteriosa per gli stessi Romani. La giornata della Dea Dia ritualizza un momento particolarmente importante dell'anno: il solstizio d'inverno.

In questo giorno particolare detto dies brevissimus (giorno brevissimo) si aprono le Ianua Coeli ovvero le Porte del Cielo (Chiave d'Oro di Giano) e la luce torna a prevalere sulle tenebre. Ricomincia il ciclo biologico della vita.

L'importanza del ruolo della Dea Dia è data anche dal fatto che nel tempio di questa Dea si ritrovavano il 19 o il 29 di maggio, i Fratelli Arvali (Arvales) per svolgere importanti liturgie in favore dei Lares (Arvalia). Gli Arvali vestiti di bianco (colore che esprime sovranità magica) tramite le cerimonie alla Dea Dia, ai Lares e a Marte (padre e fecondatore), affermavano il legame degli uomini alla loro terra.

In questo giorno, che segna l'inizio dell'anno arvalico, quindi ricordiamo i nostri Lares ovvero gli antenati e i discendenti futuri: noi viventi rappresentiamo quindi l'anello "presente" di una lunga catena sospesi fra passato e futuro.

Il Lar Familiaris è "l'anima della famiglia" il cui simbolo è il fuoco domestico, come nel caso di Vesta (Vesta Mater).

La cerimonia domestica si deve svolgere dopo il tramonto del sole rivolti alle due immagini dei Lares domestici (rappresentanti le due polarità universali: maschile e femminile).

Traditional Roman Values

There are some ethical values which not only public and private life, but also the Traditional Roman Religion constantly refers to. Surely the most important is Pietas, a very complex concept which regulates the relations between Mankind and Divine. I'll discuss this concept separately. I think that it is important to cite other values whose description may become useful also for the understanding of the concept of Pietas.

The first one is the idea of Fides. It describes the reciprocal ethical and religious obligation between mankind and the Divine and among humans. Fides can be expressed thorugh loyalty, fidelity, honesty in acts and words, in public and private life, in reciprocal trust and security.

Then it must be cited Constantia or the absolute coherence and firmness in values and decisions. It emerges in the everyday life through firmness and constance in behaviours.

Finally there is Gravitas. It is a quiet and secure force about the awareness of the personal moral value. It emerges in dignity and composure of behaviours, acts and words.

These three values are embedded into the idea of Virtus. Volgarity, excess and lack of control do not belong to Roman Tradition. If you do not hold Virtus and the values connected to it, it is not possible to immagine any approach to Pieats: Pietas will become just a series of empty rites withou any value.

Valori tradizionali Romani

Vi sono alcuni valori etici cui non solo la vita pubblica e privata, anche la Religione Tradizionale Romana fa costantemente riferimento. Sicuramente il più importante è il concetto di Pietas, un concetto molto complesso, che regola i rapporti fra l'umanità e il Divino, e che affronterò in dettaglio. Prima però di descrivere la Pietas credo sia utile descrivere alcuni valori di riferimento, la cui analisi può in seguito facilitare la comprensione di un concetto decisamente più complesso come appunto quello di Pietas.

Il primo valore è la Fides. Essa descrive la reciproca obbligazione religiosa e morale tra l'umanità ed il Divino, e fra tutti gli uomini. La Fides si esprime nella lealtà, fedeltà, onestà negli atti e nelle parole, nella vita pubblica e privata, nella reciproca fiducia e sicurezza.

Vi è poi la Constantia ovvero assoluta coerenza e saldezza di principi e propositi. Essa traspare nella quotidianità per mezzo della fermezza e la perseveranza negli atteggiamenti.

Quindi deve essere segnalata la Gravitas. E' una forza tranquilla e sicura di coscienza del proprio valore morale. Si manifesta nella dignitosa compostezza degli atti e delle parole.

Questi tre principi si fondono e si sostanziano nella Virtus. La volgarità, gli eccessi, la mancanza di controllo non appartengono all'etica tradizionale. Se non si possiede la Virtus, e i valori ad essa connessi, non si può nemmeno immaginare di avvicinarsi alla Pietas che altrimenti si ridurrebbe ad una serie di riti vuoti senza valore.

The Spelt

I've noticed that my previous post about food has stimulated some interest. For this reason now I will describe a rather complex issue related to a peculiar food which I have deliberately not mentioned in my previous post: the spelt.

Spelt in fact plays a pivotal role within the Traditional Roman Religion: for this reason I devote to spelt this specific post but highlighting that it is very difficult to be exahustive here. I thus will cite just few general concepts and ideas.

Spelt is a sacred food by definition. It plays the same role barley plays for ancient greeks. Gods and Goddesses address to the followers of roman religion calling them: spelt eaters.

There are many rites linked to spelt harvesting I cannot describe here. It is important to remember that spelt was eaten as puls: this is a sort of mush with a little bit of lard and a puree of broad beans for the festivity dedicated to Carna (June the 1st)

Panes Laureati were not proved flat breads made with spelt, water, salt and laurel leaves.

The Flamen Dialis ate strues (spelt and honey) and fertum (spelt, salt, milk and sheep liver): these were sacred not proved flat breads.

It is important to remind the mola salsa (spelt and salt) prepared by the Vestales. this flour was necessary for bloody sacrifices: the animal became sacred when its head was covered with mola salsa.

A flat bread made with spelt and honey was necessary also for not-bloody sacrifices (libum) and with the name of ianual was used as a gift to be exchanged during the festivities of january the 1st.

A specific discussion should be reserved to confarreatio (the communion or marriage with spelt): this is the most sacred form of marriage.

Spelt is the symbol of frugality, semplicity and moderation in eating.

Spelt is sacred in the Traditional Roman Religion also because it is linked to the importantce of the family and the Ancestors' Cult. Spelt represents the Ancient Food or "what our ancestors ate". Eating spelt in the everyday diet within the family the links with the ancestors and the family links themselves are simbolically reinforced.

For this reason it is important to eat spelt in any occasion: today it is quite easy. Spelt can be easily found in soups, grains and it can be eaten also in different ways and in many salads. It is possible to find also spelt flour or bread and flat breads made with spelt flour.

Also taday spelt can become again an important element within the everyday meals and in many specific festivities: for example a spelt soup is the central dish for the meal in the night of december 21st for the festivity od Divalia and the opening of Janua Coeli.

Il Farro

Ho notato che il mio post precedente relativo al cibo ha suscitato un certo interesse: Per questo ora intendo affrontare un argomento complesso relativo ad un alimento particolare che ho deliberatamente trascurato dal citare finora: il farro.

Il farro infatti svolge un ruolo focale nella Religione Tradizionale Romana: per questo motivo dedico quindi al farro una sezione specifica. Ovviamente è molto difficile essere esaurienti in questa sede: quello che riporterò sono solo concetti ed idee generali.

Il farro è l'alimento sacro per definizione. Esso svolge il ruolo che ha l'orzo per i Greci. Gli Dei e le Dee si rivolgono agli uomini e alle donne di credo romano chiamandoli "mangiatori di farro".

Tralasciando tutti i rituali e le procedure per la sua raccolta e mietitura, bisogna ricordare che il farro veniva consumato sottoforma di puls: si tratta di una polenta guarnita con pochissimo lardo e cui si aggiungeva un purè di fave novelle nella festa dedicata a Carma (1 giugno).

Vi erano poi i panes laureati focacce non lievitate di farro fatte con acqua, sale e foglie di alloro.

Il Flamine Dialis mangiava le strues (farro e miele) e fertum (con farro, sale, latte e fegato di pecora), focacce sacre (mai lievitate) di farro.

Da ricordare la mola salsa (farro misto a sale) preparata dalle Vestali necessaria per l'esecuzione dei sacrifici cruenti. L'animale da sacrificare diveniva sacer quando gli si aspergeva il capo con la mola salsa.

La focaccia di farro e miele (libum) serviva anche per i riti non cruenti e, con il nome di ianual, viene scambiata fra famiglie e amici a titolo propiziatorio il 1 gennaio.

Un discorso sepcifico andrebbe fatto per la confarreatio (il matrimonio o comunione con il farro), ovvero la forma più sacra di matrimonio,

La sacralità del farro per la Religione Tradizionale Romana è legata anche alla sacralità della famiglia e al culto degli Antenati: il farro rappresenta infatti il cibo "antico" o "primordiale". In pratica rappresenta l'alimento del capostipite di ogni famiglia: consumando il farro nei pasti in famiglia viene rinsaldato il legame famigliare ed il legame con gli Antenati.

Consumare farro ogni volta che è possibile è oggi piuttosto facile: sotto forma di minestre, zuppe, o in insalate. Esistono poi pani e focacce alla farina di farro.

Anche oggi il farro può quindi tornare ad essere un momento importante dell'alimentazione quotidiana o di molte festività specifiche: ad esempio la minestra di farro è il momento centrale del pasto consumato la notte del 21 dicembre per la festività dei Divalia e l'apertura delle Junua Coeli.

Food, diet and meals play a relevant role in the Traditional Roman Religion. Unfortunately the imagine we have today of the relation of the Ancient Romans with food has been totally distorted by the defaming propaganda of the new religions.

Nonetheless, the Ancient Romans themselves tended to be ironic about the way liberti (often christians) ate without any decency and limits: just to mention the famous Trimalchio's Party in the Petronius Satyricon.

On the contrary, Ancient Romans ate very little and in a very simple way: we now found our everyday habits on the same tradition.

The diet was based on three main frugal meals:

jentaculum (breakfast)
prandium (lunch)
cena (dinner)

During the meal just few things were eaten: usually vegetables (beans, lentils, cabbage, fresh vegetables) and fruits, a little meat, bread and flat bread, wine.

Only the cena was a real meal, while the others were rather fast snacks.

Today our meals must be inspired to the same principles: frugality and balance.

Meat consumption in particular must be limited: never eat raw meat. In some days it is not possible to eat meat (see the calendar and the festivities). Meat thus plays a peculiar role also in consideration of the principle "from death, life": during sacrifice it was used the formula "Macte!" whose meaning is "grow!"

The calendar in fact inspired often what, when and how eat. In the same way, a totally rigorous vegetarian diet is not predicted in the Roman Traditional Religion.

Food and diet thus are used to confirm the role of mankind within the natural order (see also the prometeus myth): we are not savage animals hence we do not eat too much meat and raw meat.

Moderation, frugality and balance always inspire the diet

Too much food or alchool absolutely do not belong to the Traditional Roman Religion also because this violates the principles of dignitas and gravitas to which any pater and mater familias are inspired.

Meals are also sacred events because the meal is the moment where family members gather: meals are thus sacred to Vesta

Il cibo e l'alimentazione nella Religione Tradizionale Romana svolgono un ruolo molto particolare. Purtroppo l'immagine che ci è giunta del rapporto degli antichi con il cibo è stata totalmente deformata dalla propaganda diffamatoria delle nuove religioni che si sono imposte nel tempo.

D'altro canto gli stessi Antichi ironizzavano su come mangiassero senza limiti e senza decenza soprattutto i liberti (spesso di religione cristiana): un caso su tutti la famosa Cena di Trimalcione descritta nel Satyricon di Petronio.

In realtà i Romani mangiavano piuttosto poco ed in modo molto semplice e su questa tradizione si fondano anche le nostre abitudini attuali.

La dieta si fondava su tre pasti piuttosto frugali:
il jentaculum (la colazione)
il prandium (il pranzo)
la cena

Gli elementi base erano quasi sempre verdure (legumi, cavoli, verdura fresca), formaggio, poca carne, pane e focacce, vino.

Dei tre pasti alla fine solo la cena era un pasto vero e proprio.

Oggi i nostri pasti si orientano alla stessa filosofia: frugalità ed equilibrio.

Il consumo della carne in particolare deve essere molto regolato: la carne non può essere mai mangiata cruda. In alcuni giorni del calendario poi non è possibile mangiare carne (vedere il calendario e le relative festività). L'alimentazione è anche fissata infatti da alcune festività del calendario dove è segnalato cosa, come e quando mangiare. Allo stesso modo una dieta totalmente vegetariana non rientra nei canoni tradizionali.

Il rapporto con la carne. secondo la tradizione, è quindi molto particolare anche in considerazione del principio "dalla morte, la vita": nel momento del sacrificio il sacrificante pronunciava la parola "Macte" ovvero "accresciti".

Gli uomini, secondo la tradizione, occupano un ruolo ben preciso nell'ordine della Natura, come ricorda del resto il mito Prometeico: gli uomini non sono bestie feroci (no all'eccesso smodato di consumo di carne e mai cruda) e del resto non sono nemmeno degli erbivori. La moderazione, la frugalità e l'equilibrio devono sempre quindi ispirare la dieta.

Ingozzarsi di cibo e di alcool tassativamente non rientra quindi nella Religione Tradizionale Romana anche perchè è una violazione del principio di dignitas e gravitas cui si deve ispirare ogni pater e mater familias.

I pasti sono poi il momento in cui la famiglia si riunisce: per questo rivestono sempre una funzione sacrale. Il pasto è sacro a Vesta che siede sempre vicino al focolare domestico o al luogo in cui si preparano i pasti.

November is thus dedicated to Pluto (Underground Jupiter) whose name means "extremely rich", and to Proserpina (the Girl walking like snakes). Pluto represents the deep, Proserpina a vital force nourishing life in spring.

Il mese di Novembre, così denominato perchè era il nono mese dell'anno antico che iniziava a Marzo, rappresenta il periodo dell'"Interiorità". Novembre segue il percorso di rientro nella Terra dell'energia vegetativa fino all'inverno. E' un periodo dedicato alle divinità sotterranee (Inferi) da cui deriva l'abbondanza della vita sulla superficie della Terra.

Novembre è dedicato pertanto a Plutone (Giove Infero) che significa "ricchissimo" e a Proserpina (La Fanciulla che procede come i Serpenti). Plutone rappresenta la profondità, Proserpina la forza vitale che alimenterà la vita in primavera.

A Plutone sono sacri tutti gli animali neri, il cipresso ed il narciso. Viene invocato battendo le mani per terra.

A Proserpina sono sacri il melograno ed il papavero. I funerali sono sottoposti alla sua protezione.

Acqua/Water

La giornata del 13 ottobre è dedicata all'acqua ed alle sorgenti naturali con la festività dei "Fontinalia".

In questo giorno poniamo dei fiori presso le sorgenti e le fontane per sottolineare l'importanza che viene attribuita a questo elemento naturale così connesso alla vita.

Essendo sacra l'acqua che beviamo e che ci dona la vita anche le fontane sono sacre. Fons/Juturna rappresenta lo spirito, nelle sue due polarità maschile e femminile, della sacralizzazione dell'acqua potabile e delle sorgenti.

La fontana/sorgente ha anche un importante valore simbolico perchè rappresenta un "Inizio". di conseguenza Juturna (Iuturna, Diuturna) è strettamente legata alla figura di Giano (L'Inizio).

Da ricordare che le sorgenti, come locus, ospitano delle figure spirituali particolari: le ninfe. Esse sono la rappresentazione sacrale degli ambienti acquatici. Inoltre l'acqua (non di mare) si ricollega alla figura di Nettuno.

In this day we put flowers near springs and fountains to evidence the importance to tribute to this so essential element for our life. Being water we drink and giving us life, sacred also fountains are sacred. Fons/Juturna represents the spirit, in its two male/female polarities, of the sacralization of drinking water and springs.

Fountains and springs detain also an important symbolic value because they represent a "beginning": consequently Juturna (Iuturna, Diuturna) is strctly linked to Janus (The Beginning).

It is relevant to note that springs (as loci - sites), host particular spiritual figures: the nymphs. They are the sacral representation of inner water sites. In addition water (not seawater) is linked to the figure of Neptun.

Il mese è dedicato a Giove (Iuppiter significa "Dio Padre") e rappresenta la sacralizzazione dell'Autorità con una forte connotazione sociale e pubblica, come avviene per la sua polarità femminile Giunone.

Giove pertanto rappresenta lo Stato e l'istituzione famigliare. Rappresenta come energia il cielo, la pioggia, la neve, il fulmine, il tuono e la rugiada.

Gli animali sacri di Giove sono l'aquila e l'avvoltoio.
La pianta sacra a Giove è la quercia. Giove può manifestarsi attraverso il fruscio delle fronde delle querce.

Giove è protagonista di una serie lunghissima di appellativi (Indigitamenta) tra i quali Lucetius (Origine della Luce del Giorno), Pluvius (Piovoso), Fulgurator (Fulmine diurno), Summanus (fulmine della notte), Pantocrator (Signore di Tutto), Trioculos (dai tre occhi), Prodigalis (Liberatore da incantesimi), Penninus (Signore delle Vette).

Il nome originale di questo mese è Sextilis poichè era il sesto mese del calendario antico. Venne denominato Augustus in onore dell' Imperatore Ottaviano Augusto.

Il mese è dedicato alla raccolta e alla conservazione. In particolare il mese è dedicato a Diana ovvero la polarità femminile di Apollo.

Diana viene definita come la "Sempre Lontana": si tratta di una Dea non-urbana poichè rappresenta la sacralizzazione dei boschi, delle foreste e dei luoghi selvaggi.
La sua danza sacra, riservata esclisivamente alle donne, è la "Ridda".
Durante il giorno Diana protegge gli animali selvatici e ne preserva la vita; durante la notte Diana va a caccia di animali selvatici e ne apporta la morte. In questo modo questa Dea impersonifica sia la vita che la morte come unica sorgente.

Gli animali sacri di Diana sono: la quaglia, il leone, l'orso, il cervo ed il cane da caccia.

Come Apollo è rappresentato dal Sole, Diana è rappresentata dalla Luna. Il suo simbolo principale è l'Arco che rappresenta la Falce di Luna e "l'arma selvaggia".
